Whether you’re a Grinch or a bit more die hard, you can’t beat a good festive flick. This December sees two cinema lovers events that are already sold out, both of which are films screened at the Philharmonic Hall accompanied by a live orchestra.
The touring Rom-Com romp, Love Actually, and Sci-Fi throwback, Back To The Future both get the treatment. The fact that they are both sold out tell us just how much we love the silver screen here in Liverpool, and, although you aren’t able to catch these two smash hits, there’ still plenty on offer throughout December.
Throughout December the innovators at Ghetto Golf are bringing us something extra special to get us into the season and make us feel like we’re living in a 90s New York suburb. Home Alone is one of the most iconic Christmas films of all time, being shown on repeat around the season. Now you can immerse yourself in that world accompanied by a stunning setting, 8-piece band and DJ rasp. This is a fully functional bar, so only big kids allowed (18+) and tickets are priced around £15.
Throughout the month of December the lovely folks at FACT are screening classic Christmas movies to get you and the family into the spirit. From the original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Shrek, Edward Scissor Hands to the original The Tale of Tales there is a festive flick to be seen. The great thing about this is that even though the likes of Shrek and Edward Scissor Hands aren’t officially Christmas films, they have become staples of the season and FACT wants to give you the chance to catch it on the big screen! Screenings also include the aforementioned It’s A Wonderful Life.

Another lovely local that is putting on screenings throughout the festive period is St. Georges Hall. We thought that The Phil was an amazing setting to watch a film in, but St. Georges has come in and stacked a claim to the throne. Starting from the 21st, with, of course, Home Alone, the historic hall will be screening two films a day up to the 23rd. These include Jingle All The Way, The Grinch, Elf, Frozen, and the masterpiece that is Miracle on 34th Street. To get your hands on tickets, just head to the St. Georges Hall website now.
If you’ve got a few kids to keep entertained this Christmas season then Camp and Furnace is the place to be. Frozen was a smash hit when it first dropped in 2013 featuring the Oscar winning ‘Let It Go’, a Pop banger that could be heard in every household around the time of release. Now you can all gather in one place, with the whole family, and belt it out at the top of your lungs – because we know that it is definitely a guilty pleasure of the adults’ too.
Also keep your eyes and ears peeled for a host of other festive favourite’s on at Camp & Furnace with Sno Garden. Some big announcements about this soon.
Tickets for Frozen available here.
Another Christmas film that is “not a Christmas film” is the 1988, John McTiernan action blockbuster, Die Hard. Bruce Willis plays John McClane who must fight terrorism to save the day on Christmas Eve. This is another Christmas cracker that has been taken to the hearts of the viewing public as a must watch during the festive period. There will be a themed menu and free popcorn on offer for all viewers, perfect for catching this one on a big screen.
Tickets available now.
The British Music Experience are joining in the festive film fun but putting on a special screening of the family favourite, The Muppet’s Christmas Carol. This yuletide rendition of the Charles Dickins novel brings Christmas cheer through the Muppets and a moral to a story of selfishness and loneliness. Will Ebenzer Scrooge see the wrongs in his ways just in time for Christmas? Get down to the BME to find out! Their very own Star Café will be serving cinema style snacks and refreshments.

Don’t worry, The Phil aren’t going to leave you in the lurch, even if you missed out on the other two shows. Therefore they’ve given you the chance to be transported back to 1946 in this iconic cinematic journey. Following George Bailey’s life story, we see a man at the top of his game forget what is really important in this world, all, of course, coming to ahead on Christmas Eve. Can the Christmas spirit save his life? You’ll have to head down to one of two screenings on 24th December – 11am and 2pm. This black & white classic is married perfectly to the vintage style of the building.
Arguably the two biggest names in film composition go head to head this December in a battle that could see The Phil, and the audience, brought to its knees. This is a battle that sees, or hears; Superman and Batman take on the whole Star Wars galaxy and Indiana Jones. We’ll hear the mind and time bending scores from Inception and Interstellar take on the alien forces of E.T and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. This may sound like one for fans of classical music, however these soundtracks will transport to you the many universes in which these juggernaut composers have helped create.
