A food lovers guide to August in Liverpool

We’re doing our best to avoid post-holiday blues by trying out world cuisine all in one handy place in this months food guide.

Just before summer really hit we had a host of new eateries opening, especially down the culture trip that is Bold Street. It can sometimes be hard to keep up, especially if you’re not always in town, so this month features an array of Bold Street restaurants that you may have missed. Tuck in!

Foodie Event of the Month – Viva! Vegan Festival

Viva! Vegan Festival is a one-day event held on School Lane, at The Bluecoat and The Friends Meeting House, between 10am and 5pm on Saturday 12th August. Throughout the day you’ll have a whole range of Vegan dishes to sample and possibly change the way you eat, as well as nutritional guidance and free recipes. As the diet and lifestyle, become more popular than ever before the Viva! organisation has enjoyed success all over the country, particularly with their festivals in Bristol and Cardiff. We reckon that we can do a good job of making Liverpool their best fest yet, especially at the measly entry price of £3. More info here.

Must Visit Venue of the Month – SOUK

SOUK is the latest addition to Bold Street, opening its doors in July. Souk brings the Mediterranean to our street, or shores if you will, just in time to catch the end of what has been a typical British summer. Just when you think that there can’t be any more specialities for which Bold Street can cater, SOUK comes through to make you wonder how you ever did without it. The décor makes you feel instantly relaxed whilst the salads, in particular, transport you to the Med. So, whether it’s a soothing lunch break or a cooling unwind with a glass of wine, Bold Street is the new Mediterranean coast. More info here.

Dish & Deal of the Month – Pho is Proud of its Pho

Nowhere does Pho like Pho; duh! The warming Vietnamese broth is a speciality of the eastern nation and is a warming broth that fills you up as much as it satisfies the taste buds, all with the added bonus of being less the 500 calories and contributing to a healthy heart. Eastern cultures are known for how little heart disease they have and this cleansing soup is a staple of the diet.

The best thing is that you can add in anything you want, beef, pork, prawn, tofu or an egg; that’s your prerogative. For a limited time if you return the limited edition pink chopsticks packet you get a free bowl of Pho in honour of Liverpool Pride. It warms the heart as much as the rest of the body; this is the dish that just keeps giving. Menus and more here.

Vegan/Veggie Venue of the Month – Next To Nowhere

where to eat liverpool

Situated in News From Nowhere, Next To Nowhere is a volunteer-run, radical, not-for-profit, do-it-yourself social centre. Very much in keeping with the ethos of the diet, Next To Nowhere offer an array of home-made vegan treats every Saturday afternoon. The scheme also hold occasional film nights and other events, and offer space for groups to hold meetings & events, all helping to bring a real community feel to people with shared interests. It’s easy to forget where the vegetarian and vegan diets began with some of the plush new eateries out there now, but this is really back to what it is all about, community. More info here.

(M)Eatery of the Month – Elif

Another relatively new face on Bold Street is Turkish BBQ, Elif. Here they believe that good times are made of good food, great company and a stylish, relaxed atmosphere. Turkish food is all about sharing, fresh zingy tastes, and the open fire barbecue. This place is ideal for a special occasion or a sociable dinner with a couple of cheeky drinks. It’s all that’s great about Turkish food, in contemporary, cosy surroundings. What’s not to love? Head down and try the wide selection of Turkish kebabs on offer to find out exactly why Liverpool loves Elif. More here.
