Bombed Out Church is transformed into an ice rink for one of its biggest events ever

The Bombed Out Church has been transformed into an ice rink for one of its biggest and most ambitious events ever.

A large rink is has been constructed within the Bombed Out Church walls for the next four days, from Thursday until Sunday December 3.

The historic site, which is used to hosting theatre and cinema, festivals, markets and concerts, is now looking super-Christmassy dressed with fairy lights and all ready to welcome skaters.

More than 1,200 people are expected to visit the rink, with every morning, afternoon and evening session sold out ahead of its launch.

With each session limited to 35 people, everyone will get a 1hr 15minute slot, which includes 45 minutes on the ice and extra time to collect skates and grab a hot drink.

A spokesperson for the Bombed Out Church venue said they had been delighted by the positive response since it was announced.

“We were very surprised by how quickly tickets went and weren’t expecting this reaction,” they said. “We were anticipating a lot of excited people but nothing to this scale, we’ve been overwhelmed by the response. Thanks to people purchasing tickets, this directly supports the running of Bombed Out Church as a space for cultural and community events.”

They added that months of planning have gone into bringing the rink and there have been unique challenges to overcome.

“The install of the rink itself took a full day but planning and working out logistics has taken a lot longer, that’s where months of planning come into play,” they explained. “There are a lot of things behind the scenes that need to be factored in with our venue – a church ruin has it’s challenges!”

This is the first time the Bombed Out Church has celebrated the festive season by bringing families, friends and all ages together to skate. “We’ve definitely put on some ambitious projects in the last few years, and this certainly ranks highly for us,” the spokesperson added.

But after huge demand for tickets, and so many people keen to get on the ice in stunning surroundings, it won’t be the last. And there’s some good news, especially for anyone who missed out this time.

“We plan to bring this back for longer in 2024 with further exciting elements. We are looking at doing this again next year, but earlier than you might think. Look out for more to be announced!”
