WATCH: Eurovision fans can dance around the city on a themed silent disco tour

Eurovision fans can get headphones on and join in Liverpool’s music party on a silent disco tour of the city centre.

Silent Adventures Liverpool, which runs roaming silent discos here every weekend, has created special ones to bring cheesy Eurovision anthems on to the streets.

In the run-up to the final, there’ll be seven different tours happening including a shorter one specifically for families on Saturday May 13.

Jen Cartwright, from Silent Adventures Liverpool, says it’ll be a great way for people to throw off their inhibitions, dance and sing like nobody’s watching and bond with new mates over a shared love of Eurovision.

It’s also a chance for visitors arriving in the city to get their bearings, see some sights and just have fun.

“Everyone’s in this little disco bubble and in no time they’re singing and dancing together as part of a pack in the middle of the street in the daytime,” says Jen.

“We are a tour, but it’s less about pointing out the history of buildings and more putting on headphones, having a good time and making people happy. And what’s nice for tourists is, if it’s your first or second day in the city and you’re not too sure where everything is, we do a circle around the city centre, starting and ending at the Club House in Liverpool ONE, along Castle Street and past Mathew Street, so you can get a feel for it.”

The regular party tours, on Saturday afternoons, can involve groups of up to 60, from Liverpool and all over the world.

“When we first started doing it people were a bit unsure because the idea of a silent disco tour sounds a bit mad, and until you see if you don’t really know what it is.

“At first it was mostly with hen parties, but it’s turned into such a lovely mix of people locally and people travelling to the city looking to meet up and do something a bit different.”

With United by Music being the theme of this year’s Eurovision, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to add extra tours to the schedule in honour of the contest.

“All of the songs are connected to the Eurovision theme in some way and there’s some absolute bangers in there,” says Jen.

The first one is this Sunday, May 7, at 4.30pm, on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 2pm, and on Saturday May 13, which is finals day, there will be three tours – 12noon for the shorter family one, 1.30pm and 3pm.

Jen says it doesn’t matter if you’re a natural extrovert or more shy, everyone has just as much fun once the music starts.

“You put the headsets on and at first it’s like lift music so you get the gist it’s a bit daft, then once we’re all together we warm everybody up slowly. There’s no dancing at first, just tapping your feet, then all of a sudden the whole group is doing the same movement at the same time and it doesn’t feel weird.

“There’s something really infectious about it – it’s not just you enjoying it and the people around you, it’s the people you walk past as well so you’re just spreading this joy.

“One of the main things we do is bring people together and get them to make friends with new people. You’ve got all these disco partners who’ve never met before doing a John Travolta move together!”
