Experience Albert Dock like never before this weekend at Heritage on the Dock

Celebrate the unique heritage of Albert Dock and Liverpool’s world famous UNESCO World Heritage waterfront during Heritage on the Dock – a four-day event of free walks, talks, workshops and live music.

Part of the national Heritage Open Days festival, Heritage on the Dock will be bigger than last year’s event, running from September 7-10, and will not only enable visitors the opportunity to unlock secrets of Albert Dock – home to the largest group of Grade-I listed buildings in the country – but the wider waterfront as well.

Take a Blue Badge guided heritage tour of Albert Dock, travel through the keyhole to discover what it is actually like to live in one of the Dock’s grade-listed apartments, take a closer look at the vast array of marine life hidden under the waters with Lancashire Wildlife Trust, and hear about the colourful history of one of Liverpool’s master craftsmen at the Dock-based, Leather Satchel Co.

For those with sea legs, step aboard the famed steam ship, The Daniel “ Danny” Adamson, and meet the engineers, go behind the scenes of Liverpool’s very own Dazzle Ship, The Edmund Gardner, and hear fascinating tales about the historic Yarwood tug, France-Hayhurst.

Back on dry land, the Heritage on the Dock programme expands this year to include tours of the Royal Liver Building, where you will enjoy some of the most fantastic views of the city, and the Bascule Bridge, the gateway to Stanley Dock in the north, and a mechanical marvel. Join RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) as they guide you through its new centre for architecture, RIBA North on Mann Island. Travel back in time aboard a classic bus from the Merseyside Transport Trust collection. And dig a little deeper into one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the UK – the George’s Dock Building – headquarters and ventilation station for the Queensway Tunnel.

The waterfront’s flagship attractions, including Merseyside Maritime Museum, Tate Liverpool and Museum of Liverpool will also be adding to the programme with captivating talks, workshops and behind the scenes tours.

Sue Grindrod, chief executive, Albert Dock Liverpool, said:

“We introduced Heritage on the Dock to our events programme in 2016, part of our ongoing 175 strategy as we build up to celebrating Albert Dock’s 175th anniversary in 2021. The event is a key element in our aims to unlocking the incredible heritage of the Dock for the local community to enjoy and engage in.

“Last year proved to be such a hit that we are excited to be able to bring it back this year bigger and better – now spanning four days, and for the first time, including our amazing partners across the wider waterfront, from Pier Head right up to Stanley Dock. This means visitors have the unique opportunity to explore more of our UNESCO World Heritage waterfront in ways like never before.

“From talks and walks, to workshops and live music, Heritage on the Dock is a wonderful event for those interested in the incredible history of Albert Dock and Liverpool waterfront, and a chance to meet the experts and the people fortunate enough to live and work here. What’s more, it’s totally free so there is no excuse not to take part!”

Chris Fittock, project manager, added:

“Heritage on the Dock really is for all ages, and a rare chance for families, friends and individuals to come along and see Albert Dock and our fascinating waterfront in a new light – not to mention have a lovely day out together by the river! From our iconic landmarks like Albert Dock and the Royal Liver Building, to the northern docklands and historic boats moored on the quayside, and our popular museums opening up their doors for backstage tours – it’s all in the Heritage on the Dock programme and more!
