Forgotten Wirral pub The Montgomery reopens with a brand new look
The Montgomery Pub & Kitchen

A ‘forgotten’ country pub has been completely transformed with a stunning new look!

The Montgomery Pub & Kitchen in Eastham Village has had a £150,000 refurbishment — with sumptuous decor, new management and a new kitchen team — and has quickly established itself as one of the best country pubs in Wirral.

Nestled away on Stanley Lane in a picturesque little parish in between New Chester Road and Eastham Country Park, The Montgomery Pub & Kitchen is a gem of a character pub with a beer garden and large space to the rear. Thanks to the vision of experienced local landlord Gary Runacus, Matt Croft Stonegate Group and Mark Macdzin the pub is now thriving again and gaining an incredible reputation locally.

Having recruited Head Chef Daniel Billinge to lead the kitchen team, The Montgomery Pub & Kitchen now offers quality home cooked pub food 7 days a week. The refined menu is all about quality — with loaded fries, burgers, steaks and superb Sunday lunches that locals have been loving!

The welcoming tavern brings you premium beers, real ales, fine wines and quality gastro pub dishes cooked using fresh locally sourced produce. Oozing style and charm, there’s an open fire and cosy little snugs — with a vibrant green colour scheme alongside exposed brick walls.

Owner Gary said:

“This pub is a real gem located in a beautiful little area surrounded by cottages and a church that you wouldn’t know existed, we immediately fell in love with it after stepping through the doors. It’s like stepping back in time and its very different to our other venues The Liverpool James Street, The Grenadier Halewood, The Old Sessions House Knutsford, The Canal Duke Astley, The Heather Brow Claughton Village, The Malt Shovel Neston, Sheridans Wallasey Village and The Plough Inn Lathom.

He added:

“There’s very little natural footfall though and in many respects the pub was forgotten about, to meet the locals and become part of the village has been the most incredible times for us. To work with Stonegate and Macdzin to bring it back to life has been a wonderful project and since opening its doors again in November the feedback has been amazing.”

Word has quickly spread about the quality food and drink, with quiz nights on Tuesdays, live music at weekends now introduced too.  Already a big hit amongst the people of South Wirral, people are starting to come from far and wide to experience the great food, drink and atmosphere on offer at The Montgomery Pub & Kitchen.

He said:

“The pub has a lot of history and was originally called The Stanley before its current name. The great thing about working with Stonegate is that we can help save and regenerate old pubs that have failed or fallen into disrepair. People who know this pub are delighted to see it thriving again and it’s also been great to see people travelling from further afield to visit.”

There are further plans for The Montgomery Pub & Kitchen to become one of the finest pubs in the region — with community initiatives, private functions, summer events in the beer garden and large carpark to the rear, bottomless brunches and themed evenings.  As with all pubs located off the beaten track, the quality and reputation needs to be exceptional to attract people from outside the local area.

“When you’re based in a hidden away little road like we are, it’s essential we offer something very special for people to travel for. We’re ideally located near Eastham Country Park and Old Chester Road, but unless you know we’re here you’ll completely miss us. We’re hoping our reputation will bring people here from far and wide and so far the signs are great.”

He added:

“We want to be that pub people simply have to visit after a walk in Eastham Country Park and that place people travel miles to for a Sunday roast. We also want to be much more than a pub and somewhere that serves the community. Word is getting out — we just need to keep bringing the quality.”
