Get some scouse in yer belly! 7 of Liverpool’s best scouse makers to check out right now

We don’t really need an excuse to tuck into our favourite dish, but there’s nothing more comforting during a blustery day, than a big bowl of scouse.

The humble bowl of scouse, created to fuel hardy ocean adventurers and fishermen during long stretches at sea. Or was it brought across the sea with some of the first Irish settlers to our fair city? Whichever version you believe, we’ve adopted it, adapted it and welcomed it with open arms as out city’s signature dish.

The age old argument of how do you make it (beef for us), or maybe who makes it best, routinely causes drama in households across the region, because the accolade of being the ‘Best Scouse Maker’ is one we wear with pride. Global Scouse Day, on 28th February is our favourite foodie celebration of the year and we still cant decide who makes it best. Check out the video from the 2017 Global Scouse Day as Jay and Kate tour the best city eateries and sample scouse pizza, tacos and bowl after bowl of the traditional stew.

It can mend a broken heart, fuel a Sunday league footy team, bring families together and we’re pretty sure it puts hairs on your chest too, we love scouse so much we’re rounded up some of the best city scouse makers for you to try.

Here’s 7 of the best scouse makers in the city to try out right now…….

1 – The Baltic Fleet Pub, Wapping

For an authentic scouse-eating experience, head down to The Baltic Fleet Pub opposite Albert Dock and Echo Arena. This historic pub has maritime adventure at its very roots and somehow, scouse tastes better when you’re looking out across the waterfront!

2 – The Ship & Mitre, Dale Street

The Ship & Mitre offer up a seriously tasty bowl of scouse with a little bit of what we think is mustard for an extra kick. The relaxed atmosphere, great location and vast array of beers, wines and soft drinks makes this Dale Street pub and eatery one of our faves. Get an extra round of bread and wipe that bowl clean!

3 – Clockworks, Wolstenholme Square

Relatively new to the scouse food scene, Clockworks on Wolstenholme Square serves up a mighty portion of scouse with crusty bread and beetroot, just how we like it. The menu here is really inviting, and with a kick-ass Americana soundtrack that throws out singalong tunes, why not settle in for the afternoon and get a dessert too?

4 – Maggie Mays, Bold Street

The stalwart of old school scouse makers, and still regarded as one of the city’s best. Maggie May’s of Bold Street serves up scouse like your nan makes, a traditional recipe that is perfect for a cold autumnal day. You can choose beetroot, red cabbage or both and service always come with a smile and a gab. What’s not to like?

5 – The Chancery, Paradise Street

We’ll bet you never knew scouse could look so sophisticated? The Chancery, Paradise Street offer a chunky, warming bowl of scouse that is filling yet really quite beautiful to look at. Don’t get all emotional though, it’ll go cold! Owning to the deli part of The Chancery we reckon owner Gary can also find you the perfect wine accompaniment too.

6 – Ma Boyle’s, The Strand

Your Guide Liverpool

Treat yourself to a bowl of classic scouse, crusty bread and pickled red cabbage at Ma Boyle’s Alehouse & Eatery, one of Liverpool’s oldest pubs. With views of the stunning St Nick’s church and right opposite the Three Graces, you wont find a more scouse location to tuck in!

7 – Thomas Rigby’s, Dale Street

One of our favourite producers of old school scouse is Thomas Rigby’s on Dale Street. First off we love the pub anyway, but nipping in at lunchtime for a bowl of scouse and a swift half is enough to see anyone through until 5pm with a smile on their face. Did you know manager Jimmy puts brown sauce on his scouse? Jurys out on that one!
