Liverpool Comic Con 2018 Highlights from a star-studded Exhibition Centre
6 years ago
Liverpool Comic Con 2018 promised to be an event by the fans, for the fans, and it didn’t disappoint.
Exhibition Centre Liverpool was swarmed with comic book fans, celeb spotters and some seriously impressive cosplay characters as the first independent Liverpool Comic Con 2018 got underway. With two full days packed with film sets and props, retro arcade games, special guest signings and photos plus more merchandise than you can shake a Nimbus 2000 at and we were right in the thick of it from the moment the doors opened.
Surrounded by some of the most famous characters to have graced our TV and film screens, we wandered the stalls, listened to special guest panel talks, got hands on with time machines, iconic cars and the odd power lifter before heading to the celeb meet and greet area to chat with none other than Mini Me actor, Verne Troyer, the original Hulk, Lou Ferrigno and Dr Who actor, Ian McNeice.

As national company MCM Comic Con announced it was dropping the popular Liverpool dates from it’s nationwide tour, local event organiser and comic con fan, Andrew Kleek decided to stage an event by the fans, for the fans, and alongside Monopoly Events, produced a family friendly convention that not only championed local traders and brought back childhood memories, but also attracted international stars such as Actor Dirk Benedict and WWE star, Adam Copeland.
Brand new for Comic Con fans this year were more than 40 retro arcade games including Street Fighter, Frogger, Pac Man and Daytona USA – all of which were free to play. Exhibition Centre Liverpool also lent itself well to housing some impressive vehicles including a BatWing, Transformers, The Mystery Machine and the epic A Team van too.
With our hard earned cash burning a whole in our pockets we managed to clear out the Cookie Monster homemade cookie stall, we got our very own, original Dennis the Menace illustration direct from scouse cartoonist Nigel Parkinson, we went overboard on the keyrings, badges, pins and plushies of course and finished up trying on all the Steam Punk hats and goggles.

No Comic Con event would be complete without a famous face or three and Liverpool Comic Con 2018 went all out to bring some of the biggest and most recognisable film and TV stars to the city. We chatted with Mini Me actor, Verne Troyer about his favourite role, Ace Venture actor and Hollywood stalwart, Ian McNeice told us about his stint on Dr Who and the incredible Hulk, Lou Ferrigno couldn’t get enough of our amazing city and his scouse fans.
Also on the celeb panel was wrestling star, Gail Kim, firmly flying the flag for strong, independent women role models, while Liverpool’s very own Dr Who, Paul McGann enjoyed catching up with fans who chose his portrayal as the 8th travelling time Lord, as their favourite.
