This Autumn, Netflix will mark the release of brand-new animated film OVER THE MOON by unveiling breathtaking lantern installations in and around two of the UK’s most iconic Chinatowns crated b Liverpool’s very own Lantern company.
A series of magical light displays will illuminate London and Birmingham Chinatowns from late October and November, subject to lockdown restrictions. The installations will celebrate the Chinese folklore of the Mid-Autumn Festival through the lens of the new animation film, which tells the story of the Moon Goddess through the eyes of determined young girl, Fei Fei.
Across the two cities there will be over seventy striking lanterns, hand-crafted by the Liverpool-based Lantern Company, who have previously displayed at London’s Lumiere Festival and at a whole host of other events across the globe.
Based here in Liverpool, Lantern Company is one of the UK’s leading outdoor arts company with an international reputation for delivering great quality training, cultural events and illuminated installations. They create amazing and memorable experiences for diverse audiences of all ages, from small scale theatrical events to spectacular outdoor shows and carnival parades.
The lanterns will come to life each evening in stunning light displays, depicting the fantastical journey to the moon made by Fei Fei and her companion Bungee in a giant rocket. Other lanterns will depict Foo Dogs, Moon Frogs, Jade Rabbit and Lunarian creatures, with each installation culminating in a stunning depiction of the moon bearing the image of the Moon Goddess.
With the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations beginning this month with the moon at its brightest, the Over the Moon Lantern Trail will extend these celebrations, embracing the magical folklore traditionally celebrated with lanterns and mooncakes.
