Andy, who has recently become an RHS Master of Horticulture, has more than 15 years of practical horticulture and teaching experience at institutes such as the Welsh College of Horticulture and Ness Botanic Gardens.

He’ll be joined by Nif who specialises in botany, horticulture and conservation and is currently a botany tutor for the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland (BSBI).

Annie Bowden, The Reader’s Programme and Participation Manager, says the course is a great way for everyone to expand their gardening knowledge, whatever the size of their garden or level of experience.

“At The Reader, we’ve got a wonderful volunteer gardening group who maintain all of our gardens and we realised there was a real appetite for gardening so we decided to work with experts on some courses,” she says.

“Gardening for Everyone will suit anyone just getting started or people who’ve been enthused over the summer by the nice weather and feel like they want to increase their skills.”

Annie says with mental health awareness becoming more of a priority, gardening has seen a boom in popularity among all ages.

“I think during Covid people really developed a sense of ownership of their own green spaces and valued the slower pace and calm that gardening gives you.

“The Reader’s main focus is bringing people together to enhance wellbeing and hopefully this course will give people a combination of wellbeing and also learning new skills to apply to their own life and their own garden.”

A mountain of rainbow-coloured foam will be taking over part of Liverpool city centre later this month!

Island of Foam – an ambitious, temporary shape-shifting artwork will take over Liverpool ONE’s Sugar House Steps (near John Lewis) on the afternoon of Saturday 31 August. It has been commissioned by Culture Liverpool in partnership with Global Streets.

The brainchild of German artist Stephanie Lüning, the brightly coloured foam will slowly take over an area of the steps starting at 2pm, growing and constantly taking shape, ultimately making the steps disappear.

When it’s complete, it’s time to get messy as onlookers are invited to explore the artwork and create their very own foam party on the ground level.

And as the installation is entirely biodegradable, it will disappear without a trace within hours.

The unique exhibit forms part of ‘The Last Day of Summer’ festival which offers a whole host of free, family fun including water sport sessions, street performances, crafting, music, silent adventure tours and even access to swan pedalos.  To find out more and to book on to some of the sessions, head to the official event website.  The festival has been organised by Liverpool BID Company, Royal Albert Dock Liverpool, Peel Waters and Culture Liverpool.

Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Health and Wellbeing, Councillor Harry Doyle, said:

“Foam is a first for Liverpool and this is going to be an unforgettable spectacle.

“Our Culture Liverpool team is always looking for something different to bring to the city, which not only makes you appreciate a new artform but also makes you look at an area you may be familiar with, in a whole different way.

“Island of Foam is a great addition to the overall The Last Day of Summer programme, which will be a fantastic day out for all the family.”

Artist, Stephanie Lüning, said:

“In Liverpool you can see the ephemeral character in its architectural contrasts. You have very traditional buildings next to contemporary architecture and lots of construction sites all over town.

“I love to interweave the local architecture and its stories to present my vanishing art action in these ever changing public space. But what I love most is, to surprise people- to draw the audience out of their daily routines and comfort zones for a brief moment. Liverpool seems to be the perfect place to implement a colourful and playful pile of magic.”

Donna Howitt, Place Strategy Director at Liverpool ONE, said:

“We are thrilled to host the Island of Foam – it’s a unique and exciting experience for families, transforming a well-known part of Liverpool ONE into a vibrant sea of rainbow foam.

“We love exploring new ways to create unforgettable experiences for our visitors, and the Island of Foam is the perfect finale to the summer holidays. We can’t wait to see everyone getting involved and enjoying all the activities across the Waterfront!”

The presence of darts at Flight Club shouldn’t fool anyone into thinking they will be walking into an old, dark and dingy boozer. Quite the opposite in fact. This spectacular bar is a vibe on a whole new level.

Think fairground-style lights blinking in time to the music, a carousel horse, a disco phone booth and antique treasures and trinkets everywhere you turn.

Steve Moore, CEO and co-founder of Flight Club, said:

“For years we’ve been eyeing up Liverpool as the perfect place for Flight Club. There’s nothing we love more than an epic night out and that’s something both Liverpool and Flight Club always deliver on, so it feels like a match made in heaven.

“This new venue has been months in the making to get every detail just right. We’re so excited that the time has finally come for us to welcome the people of Liverpool inside and we can’t wait to kick off the party.”

Rob Deacon, Director of Asset Management at Grosvenor, said:

“The opening of Flight Club has been hotly anticipated since we announced its signing last year, and the new space more than delivers the high calibre and immense scale of concept that has become synonymous with Liverpool ONE.

“It is no surprise that Liverpool has been named the UK’s most sociable city, and the addition of Flight Club to our leading entertainment line-up only adds to that.”

This new collection is deeply personal for the sisters who founded the company, who lost their father to mental health issues in 2021, shortly after the brands launch.

FOUNDERS CLUB is designed in his honour, with an aim to raise awareness and support for a cause close to their hearts. Megan Kimmance, Red Run Creative Director & Co-Founder, said:

“Founders’ Club is something we have been dreaming of launching since the early days of Red Run. We’ve been so fortunate to have an incredibly loyal customer base, most of whom have been with us since launch and have continued to buy each collection I design. Without them, Red Run would not of had the success and growth it’s had over the past 4 years, so designing a collection in honour of them, the true founders, is really very special.

“Our father was so proud when Abby and I created Red Run, I’m so happy we can honour him with this collection as well as supporting such an amazing cause in the process.”

The Moog at 60 will take place at Liverpool Hope University’s Capstone Theatre from 21-24 November 2024.

This landmark celebration will pay homage to the revolutionary instrument and its inventor Robert Moog, which changed popular music forever in 1964.

The Moog, a name synonymous with electronic music, was the first-ever commercial synthesiser. Through its revolutionary concept of analogue modular synthesis, the instrument heralded a succession of technological developments in music throughout the 60s and 70s. It was a key feature in the most innovative electronic and experimental music, progressive rock and jazz fusion of the time.

The Moog
The Moog

Paving the way for a succession of technological developments in music, The Moog created a new sound which was soon embraced by legendary acts such as Kraftwerk, George Harrison, and the Rolling Stones.

Following a period in electronic music production in the 80s and 90s dominated by digital synthesis, more recently analogue modular synthesisers have returned to the centre stage in electronic music, with artists enthralled by the instruments’ timbral richness and their tactile sensitivity and playability.

Opening the festival in Liverpool on Thursday 21 November will be a headline show featuring Will Gregory Moog Ensemble; a collective led by Goldfrapp’s Will Gregory and whose members include Portishead’s Adrian Utley and composers Graham Fitkin and Ben Foster. Expect sounds from their latest album Heat Ray, an album inspired by the work of Greek mathematician Archimedes.

On Friday 22 November, the Capstone hosts a Lydia Kavina and The Twelve Hour Foundation double bill. Theremin player Lydia Kavina has graced stages with renowned orchestras such as the London Symphony, Radio France Orchestra and the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia, whilst The Twelve Hour Foundation, whose music is released on the Castles in Space label, has had airplay from the likes of Stuart Maconie, Gideon Coe, Pete Wiggs and Project Moonbase.

On Saturday 23 November, the festival welcomes another double bill in Dave Bessell and Polypores. A classically trained musician with a doctorate in classical orchestration, Dave Bessell has also enjoyed an extensive career in popular music contributing to albums by Killing Joke and Suede. Polypores’ music has been released by respected electronic music labels such as Castles In Space, Polytechnic Youth, Woodford Halse, DiN and Frequency Domain.

The celebration culminates on Sunday 24 November with A Tribute to Kraftwerk: 50 Years of Autobahn and Far Beyond. For the 50th anniversary of the iconic group’s international breakthrough album Autobahn, music technology expert Mark Jenkins presents a striking live solo performance of the band’s hits. For lovers of these innovators and pioneers of electronic music, this very special anniversary gig is simply a must.

The Capstone Theatre’s Neil Campbell said

“During the past few years, The Capstone Theatre has become a hotbed of electronic music and we have hosted many packed out nights. This, our first-ever festival of electronic music, will be particularly special — featuring some incredible acts in celebration of the groundbreaking instrument that changes music forever. We’re thoroughly excited.”

Event tickets start at £16.50, with festival bundle tickets available from £55.

Liverpool is set to honour one of its most beloved icons, Sir Ken Dodd, with the creation of a dedicated space to celebrate the life and career of the legendary comedian.

As plans move forward for The Sir Ken Dodd Happiness Centre, the people of Liverpool are being invited to share their thoughts on what they’d like to see in this new permanent home for Sir Ken’s archive in the heart of the city.

Liverpool’s Royal Court, working with The Comedy Trust and The Sir Ken Dodd Charitable Foundation, submitted plans last Autumn for the brand new £15m building dedicated to Liverpool’s rich comedy heritage to Liverpool City Council. Building work could begin in 2025 with the doors set to open in 2027 to mark what would have been Sir Ken Dodd’s 100thbirthday.

The four-storey building would become a permanent home to The Sir Ken Dodd archive and Happiness exhibition currently showing at National Museum Liverpool, and will celebrate the life and career of Sir Ken Dodd, while also offering spaces for comedy-based workshops, talks and performances. The centre will be operated by Liverpool’s Royal Court as an extension of the Royal Court Theatre.

The Happiness Centre will celebrate all forms of comedy and humour and provide opportunities for all to take part in a wide range of programmes, workshops and sessions with comedy, humour, health and wellbeing at their heart.

Through the lens of Doddy, Liverpool’s most famous entertainer, The Sir Ken Dodd Happiness Centre will highlight and explore Liverpool humour and the role the city played in becoming a cradle of entertainment for countless comedians. The centre will also explore how comedy and humour defines Liverpudlians, why the city is known world-wide for its wit and humour and how we can use laughter and humour to make us feel better and improve wellbeing.

The centre will be built on the land adjacent to Liverpool’s Royal Court, on the site currently occupied by Courtyard Bar & Kitchen. Once completed, the centre will house a new 100-seat restaurant.

The £15m project will be designed by Stirling Prize winning architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM), who were also behind the extensive refurbishment of Liverpool’s Royal Court. Funding for the project is coming from a number of sources, primarily the Sir Ken Dodd Charitable Trust.

As well as being a home for comedy in the city, the building will join on to the theatre, creating new dressing rooms and office space that will allow the staging of larger and more ambitious works in the future.

The public are being asked what they would like to see as part of the museum and archive, as its plans move on to the next stage.

Lady Anne Dodd said:

‘I am thrilled that my dream of creating a legacy to celebrate Ken’s life has reached such a landmark stage. I think the building looks fantastic and I know Ken would be delighted at its location, just a stone’s throw from his favourite building in the city, St George’s Hall.

“I am thoroughly enjoying working with Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre and architect Paul Monaghan of AHMM and very much look forward to getting on with the next stage which will include planning a programme of events and activities to inform the design of the inside and outside the Sir Ken Dodd Happiness Centre. Ken spent many happy hours entertaining thousands in the Royal Court Theatre and I know he would be delighted that his legacy building links to the theatre he helped to save back in 1979.’

Gillian Miller, CEO of Liverpool’s Royal Court, said:

‘We are delighted to announce planning approval for this iconic legacy to Liverpool’s greatest entertainer, Sir Ken Dodd.  We have been working with Lady Anne Dodd from the beginning of the design process to ensure that the building reflects Ken’s mantra that ‘Happiness is the greatest gift that we possess’.

“There is no better city than Liverpool to create a centre for happiness and wellbeing in, and we are looking forward to delivering a unique building for the city that epitomises happiness. Our plans for the world’s biggest tickling stick will become a landmark for the city attracting tourists and visitors from near and far, putting a smile on everyone’s face. This is a wonderfully positive project for the city and much needed in these uncertain times.”

Paul Monaghan, Executive Director of Allford Hall Monaghan Morris Architects, said:

“Having grown up in Liverpool in the sixties and seventies I was always aware of Sir Ken Dodd from his music, TV appearances and legendary performances. He was always a favourite because his humour was surreal and timeless which is why he was still a popular entertainer up until his passing.

“It’s therefore a great honour to work on the design for this building with Lady Anne Dodd and the Royal Court Theatre on such a key site in Liverpool. The building will provide a great legacy for his work along with providing educational spaces for the youth of the City. Its multicoloured facade and sustainable design will provide a fitting landmark to a great man.”

Two key events at Liverpool’s Roal Court will celebrate Sir Ken Dodd this Autumn:

Annual Happiness Show – 27 October 2024 – more info here.

A unique, interactive Christmas experience will bring a special kind of magic to Liverpool’s Kings Dock this festive season, taking families on an extraordinary theatrical adventure through Christmas-Shire.

Nutmeg the elf has been looking after the Christmas magic since last year but hasn’t done a very good job and most of the supply has been spilt – probably by a cheeky reindeer!

Without the Christmas magic, Father Christmas’ sleigh won’t be able to fly so elf friends Nutmeg and Sprout need the help of their Christmas-Shire visitors to make more magic and save Christmas.

Kings Dock

Visitors will join Nutmeg on an interactive, 45-minute behind-the-scenes adventure through the enchanted yurts of Christmas-Shire, meeting other charming characters as they go.

Captivating storytelling, performances and plenty of photo opportunities will lead the elves and their human helpers to a heartwarming encounter with Father Christmas, who will gift an ethically sourced present as a reward for rescuing Christmas.

Christmas-Shire at Kings Dock (next to the Wheel of Liverpool) is the latest project from experiential event specialists, Sneaky Experience.

Julia Benfield, director of Sneaky Experience, said:

“I can’t wait for our visitors to see the enchanted yurts of Christmas-Shire pitch up along Kings Dock.

“Christmas-Shire captures Sneaky Experience’s unique offering, we have exquisite costumes, beautiful creations from our award-winning makeup artists and a rare opportunity for our audience to be part of the story, guided by our professional cast of actors.

“Events like this are a huge team effort and we know our visitors will love it as much as we do.”

Martin Coat, Sneaky Experience’s creative director, added:

“Watching the reactions of our visitors’ faces makes me wish I was seeing it all for the first time too, it’s a truly engaging and exciting journey to be part of for all ages.”

Christmas-Shire will be based on the banks of Kings Dock by the Wheel of Liverpool, featuring three Scandinavian-inspired yurts, which will become the Liverpool home of Father Christmas, Nutmeg and the rest of the elves before they journey back to the North Pole.

Kings Dock

“With our annual pantomime entertaining audiences inside and the yurts of Christmas-Shire delighting visitors on the outside, it will be a festive feast for children of all ages at Kings Dock this year.”

Opening at Shakespeare North Playhouse Friday 28 February to Saturday 22 March, Love’s Labour’s Lost (More or Less) will then play at the Stephen Joseph Theatre from Thursday 27 March – Saturday 19 April.

The show follows on from the huge success of the two theatres’ co-production of The Comedy of Errors (more or less) in the spring of 2023, which was UK Theatre Award-nominated.

Directed by Stephen Joseph Theatre’s Artistic Director Paul Robinson, this new adaptation, again by Elizabeth Godber and Nick Lane, will set the story of four young men attempting to improve themselves by swearing off sex in mid-90s Ibiza… Shakespeare’s riotous comedy is brought to life in the nineties, featuring belting musical numbers in the era of boy bands and Girl Power.

A new adaptation by Elizabeth Godber and Nick Lane set in mid-90s Ibiza.

The stags have made a solemn promise to each other: this is a boys’ weekend. Don’t talk to any girls, don’t even think about any girls and most importantly, do not contact the hens.

The hens are ready for fun in the sun when the resort calls to say they’ve had to relocate them… to a hotel in Ibiza. Both groups of revellers are stuck on the same Mediterranean island. Cue: shoddy disguises, mislaid love letters and theatrical chaos.

Co-writer Elizabeth Godber said:

“I’m so excited to be back working with Nick, the SJT and Shakespeare North on another hilarious Shakespeare adaptation. Love’s Labour’s Lost is one of my favourite Shakespeare plays, and to get the chance to play with the language, develop the (already great) female characters, and add in plenty of 1990s pop classics has been an absolute joy! I can’t wait for audiences to come and see the show it’s funny, irreverent, and I’m sure Shakespeare would approve – he would have definitely been a Britpop fan!”

Director Paul Robinson says:

“We had the most enormous fun making The Comedy of Errors (more or less) in the spring of 2023, and our audiences did too! We couldn’t resist following it up with another of the Bard’s early comedies, this time set a decade later in the midst of the party era that was the 1990s. We’ll again be including some great music from the period, and just wait until you see those 90s fashions again…”

Laura Collier, Creative Director at Shakespeare North Playhouse:

After the success of our 2023 co-production of Comedy of Errors (More or Less)—a show so entertaining that people kept coming back for more—we knew we had to join forces again.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to be working with the Stephen Joseph Theatre again, alongside the talented writers Nick Lane and Elizabeth Godber. We all share a deep love for Shakespeare and his timeless tales, and a passion for exploring and presenting fresh, exciting perspectives and reworkings. A perfect foundation for an outrageously fun Love’s Labour’s Lost. We can’t wait to see what lies in store when we’re all transported back to the 90s”

Casting and creative team to be announced.

The winner of the first ever Port Sunlight Photographer of the Year competition has been revealed.

Earlier this year, photographers of all levels of experience were invited to submit their snaps taken in and around the famous Wirral village, which is one of the finest surviving examples of an industrial worker village in the world. The competition is organised by Port Sunlight Village Trust, with entry fees going to support their work to protect the village’s several important monuments.

Port Sunlight
Dan Bentley – Second Place

Following judging by award-winning press photographers Paul Ellis and Bruce Adams, the competition organisers at Port Sunlight Village Trust (PSVT) have announced Andrew Crothall’s magical photograph of a ‘snowbow’ over the village as the winning snap.

The two runners-up were Dan Bentley for his birds-eye view of Port Sunlight’s Grade I listed War Memorial, and David Kelly for capturing a front door of one of the village’s distinctive houses with the iconic Dell Bridge and Lyceum in the background. Other entries ranged from wildlife to architecture to scenes from everyday village life.

Andrew Crothall, the competition winner, said:

“I am delighted to have won the Port Sunlight Photographer of the Year 2024 competition. The village is a beautiful place and there are always photographic opportunities, but it is extra special in the snow. However, this doesn’t happen very often so I always rush down to the village first thing in the morning if there has been overnight snow. On this occasion the sky started to clear just after sunrise on a cold January morning and the first rays of sunlight illuminated ice crystals in the atmosphere, creating a rare ’snowbow’ over The Diamond.”

Bruce Adams, photographer and competition judge, said:

“It was a great pleasure for Paul Ellis and myself to judge the varied and inspirational images submitted. The winners and runners up are well deserved and have created images that truly show why Port Sunlight is such a special place.”

Port Sunlight
David Kelly – Third Place

Jean Milton, director of heritage at Port Sunlight Village Trust, said:

“The competition received some fabulous entries, however Andrew’s shot captured the magic of Port Sunlight’s landscape and architecture perfectly. We’d like to thank all the entrants for taking part and supporting our work to preserve and promote this special village.”

Andrew Crothall’s winning photograph is gracing the front cover of a new Port Sunlight calendar, which also includes the runners up and a selection of other entries. The calendar will go on sale later this year, but is available to pre-order here. Each sale of the calendar will raise money for PSVT’s work to protect Port Sunlight’s monuments.

The winner, runners up and a selection of other entries for the Port Sunlight Photographer of the Year can be viewed in an online exhibition here.

Crowds were cheering as King Charles arrived in Southport this afternoon to meet the survivors of the Southport stabbings and their families.

King Charles III arrived in Southport today, 20 August, for a private visit to meet the survivors affected by the Southport stabbings that shocked the nation.

Crowds cheered as the King arrived at Southport Town Hall shortly after 1.30pm, where tributes have been left outside in memory Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, who all died in the attack.

Charles stopped to look at the memorials and greet some of those gathered before going inside the building to meet some of the children who survived the attack, their families and the police liaison team working with them.

The King is due to meet with the three bereaved families in London on Wednesday.

Hundreds of bunches of flowers and cuddly toys have been laid near the town hall, where a vigil was held the night after the attack.

The King walked around the tributes, waving to the crowd and shaking some hands and was applauded as he walked into the building.

Balloons in the shape of stars, hearts, a disco ball and the girls’ ages were among the tributes and messages were placed in frames, covered with plastic to preserve them, including one which read: “God has gained three beautiful new angels… May you dance forever in heaven and be at peace.”

People began to gather outside the town hall from about 11.30am to catch a glimpse of the King.

Later, Charles will be welcomed by local politicians at Southport Community Fire Station and will hear from Merseyside’s police, fire and rescue and ambulance services about their roles during the disturbances, as well as meeting local groups, including faith leaders.

Following the attack last month, rioting broke out in Southport and across the country.

The disorder included looting, with hotels housing asylum seekers also attacked before counter-demonstrations appeared to quell the disturbances.

The violence, denounced as “far-right thuggery” by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, was sparked by false claims about the identity of a teenage suspect later charged with three counts of murder.

The family of the final child to be released from hospital earlier this month condemned the “disorder” and attacks on police officers, emphasising that “when the horrific events unfolded, our police officers were the first on the scene”.

The King has been engaging privately with the issues generated by the disorder which has seen hundreds arrested.

Following the Southport stabbings Charles, at his request, received daily briefings about the national situation when the disorder was at its height.

It is not known what issues he has been focusing on, but he is a long-term promoter of inter-faith dialogue as a way to bring groups together and has championed community cohesion.

The violent disturbances left some Muslim communities fearful following the targeting of mosques in a few areas.

During separate telephone calls earlier this month with the Prime Minister and senior police chiefs, the King called for unity and praised the “community spirit” that countered the riots, and offered his “heartfelt thanks” to the police for restoring order.

Axel Rudakubana, 18, has been charged with the murder of the three girls in Merseyside.

He is also charged with the attempted murder of yoga class instructor Leanne Lucas, businessman John Hayes, and eight children, who cannot be named for legal reasons, and possession of a kitchen knife with a curved blade.

Liverpool charity Mandela8 is launching its next course to help young people stay on the right path – and out of trouble.

The 12-week programme by Mandela8 will take place at the Everyman Theatre from next month and will support children from some of the most deprived communities in the city who are vulnerable and at risk of getting involved in, or exploited fro

Sonia Bassey, MBE, trustee and chair of the Toxteth-based organisation said:

“We have seen in recent weeks how urgently this is needed.”

“It’s called Roots and Wings because when I was growing up, we had strong foundations and a good education, and we knew right from wrong.  Sadly, some people don’t have these opportunities in the current climate.

“But when you give the right values, that family environment, and feelings of belonging in a community, when they are ready to spread their wings they can fly as far and wide as they want.

“And if they do get their wings clipped and they fall by the wayside, they’ve got the resilience to pick themselves up and start again. That’s what’s missing from society at the moment.”

The Mandela8 charity, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, was set up with a mission to make the world a better place.

Its aims include educating young people and ensuring social justice and human rights, and changing mindsets to bring people together.”

The Roots and Wings Course offers drama, martial arts, and personal development training, along with a host of other learning opportunities and certified accreditations.

And it’s free to 11-16-year-olds who are referred on to it by schools, youth services, parents and guardians, the justice system, and more.

Sonia explains:

“We are trying to help young people who have probably struggled over the last few years because of lockdown to try to have a more stable life at home, in school and in their community.

“What’s different about our programme is that it’s not attached to any school, or community or youth centre, it’s independent and delivered in a neutral venue outside of school hours to those who want to see a difference and make a change in their lives.

“We ask parents to bring them and pick them up every week to make sure they arrive safely and go home safely, but also so that the parents can get involved in it too in different ways.”

“We also give young people activities outside the programme sessions to engage their parents in a more positive and productive relationship.”

Sonia stresses that the course helps people to become more confident and assertive, and to learn how to say no in certain situations, and be more sure of who they are, in themselves and their achievements, and their ability.

Sonia added:

“It makes them more resilient to certain situations. It increases their awareness of influences around them, from drugs and exploitation and situations like that, and it also gives them a set of AQA qualifications that, when they go back into school, their peers don’t have yet.”

The course is designed to make it easier for young people to get back into the mainstream classroom if they are on the edge of exclusion and repair any damaged relationships.

“We are trying to help young people to get on the right path and stay out of trouble, and find a new way.  It’s really important we have the mechanisms to support young people.”

Mandela8 will run the course for 15 people from September 16 and is looking for a sponsor or donations to enable them to run two each year.

“We are secure for one programme for three years, but we would love to do two. Sadly, we don’t get any support from the city and have been extremely lucky to get funding from Plus Dane Group, Football for Change, Penny Lane Builders Ltd., and the Everyman and Playhouse.

“But given the urgency for this kind of support for young people we would love to hear from anyone out there who can help us to offer young people sustained intervention that invests in them and gives them the ability to move on.”

To help support Mandela8 and Roots and Wings, go to www.mandelaliverpool8@gmail.com.

Anyone interested in the programme or wanting to refer someone can call Kevin Stuart on 07956 695957 or email tsa.contactus@gmail.com.

One of the most iconic singers, actors and performers of the past 50 years, David Essex, is coming to Liverpool for one night this September.

David Essex will be performing a set packed with classic hits spanning an incredible career when he brings his latest UK tour to the Empire on Monday September 9.

If you haven’t already got your seats, here are 6 reasons you should book tickets to see David Essex at the Liverpool Empire …

It’s a chance to hear so many well-known songs

Not many artists can claim to have had a career that’s lasted anywhere near as long as David Essex’s, with his first big success Rock On dating back to 1973, and there’ve been so many since. This latest show will be filled with hits like that one, Hold Me Close, Stardust, That’ll Be The Day, Gonna Make You A Star, Lamplight and Oh What A Circus, as well as more recent material.

Back in the day, David Essex was an absolute superstar

It’s tempting just to think of the likes of David Bowie and Marc Bolan when you remember the biggest chart stars of the 70s but David Essex was huge. He was like the Harry Styles of his day. His poster was on the walls of millions of fans (mostly lovestruck girls!) and he couldn’t walk down the street without getting mobbed.

It’s going to be a real nostalgia fest

David Essex has still got that same charisma and twinkle he always had and who doesn’t love to be reminded of the songs from your teenage years and early 20s? He’s won a whole new generation of admirers too because those hits have really stood the test of time, so much so that his debut album Rock On was just re-released this summer on limited edition yellow vinyl.

He’s known as a fabulous live performer

Because he’s had parallel careers as a singer and actor, with theatre credits including Godspell, ELF!, Evita, Boogie Nights 2, Footloose and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Aspects Of Love, as well as his own musicals Mutiny! and All The Fun Of The Fair, he’s got fantastic stage presence and he really knows how to put on a show.

He’s been an inspiration to other artists too

David Essex hasn’t just had an incredible career himself, he’s also inspired other bands and singers. REM’s Drive, from their mega-hit album Automatic for the People, features the line ‘hey kids, rock ‘n’ roll’ and frontman Michael Stipe who wrote it has said this was his personal homage to David Essex’s Rock On.

This is a bona fide 70s and 80s pop legend (and heartthrob!)

And they don’t play here every day, especially not bringing such amazing memories. The final stop of this tour, his first since 2022, is the London Palladium so catch him in Liverpool before that.
