Scouse Samba dancers to perform at Rio Carnival 2016

When we heard that the Scouse flag will be flown at the biggest party in the world we had to find out more. Meet Simone, the lady responsible for making it happen….

My name is Simone Reeves, I am 33, Brazilian and also British citizen. Married to a British man, Philip Reeves and we have two baby girls aged 2 and 7 months, a cat named Tico, a dog named Lala and more than a dozen fish, living happily in the quiet Birkdale in Southport…

But don’t be fooled by the seemingly normal British household life. Oh no, nothing in our lives fits in with the “normal”.
Many of you will have seen me strutting my stuff in the streets of Liverpool since 2008 as the lead dancer on Brazilica Festival. Well who doesn’t remember the year of 2013 when I paraded with my 8 1/2 months baby belly on that carnival float aka the adapted “scooter”?!! It did bring a smile in many shocked faces, but they were also pleased to see then in 2014 little Isabella parading with Mummy.

Apart from all the glamorous events and TV appearances with the Viva Brasil Samba Show business that I run, I also teach samba dancing and have done for many years in Liverpool. I love not only showing to girls and ladies from all walks of life that, yes they can samba, but also to see how they grow and improve as a person, becoming more confident and loving their bodies more, going out into their daily lives and owning it.

With that, every 2 years or so, i ask who wants to go to Rio carnival, but not to sit and watch it! No, to take part, yes parade and strut their stuff in the worlds greatest party!!
I have been doing this for some time now, and the Liverpool girls have been loving it, making awesome memories. And so it is, that for 6 of them, this year starts with a huge bang!

They will be performing at the Rio Carnival 2016!

Rio Carnival 2016

Firstly, I shall get them to Copacabana or Ipanema beach, make them get a wee tan, so they don’t glare so much next to everyone else! 🙂

On the 8th of february 02:25 – 03:50 in the morning -local time (yes, that late, it is a party after all) we shall grace the first float of one of the oldest and top samba school in Rio,Mangueira. Some of the girls are scared of heights…so we have got a slight problem in our hands because the floats in Rio Carnival are massive! With a max width of aprox 28 feet and the height can be up to 36 feet, we better start working on this so they don’t go all wobbly on the knees!!
It will be the first time that they go on a float, usually everyone thats gone to the carnival so far, only parade in the ground.
I myself always go on floats, so will be nice to have them with me.

They are learning the lyrics to the song we are performing too – I have to say they sound really funny with their scouse accent!

Our costume will be stunning, all gold and massive, we are representing Oxum which symbolises love, unity and marriage as well as being the holder of fertility, she is the Queen of all drinkable water and I assume our float will probably have water. We can’t wait to try it on, however not looking forward to how on earth we will fit it on our luggages to bring it back home!!

The husband quite likes downing a costume as you can see here in this Mangueira School costume, but this year he will be on Daddy day care duties while we go to the Sambadrome.

Although I am no longer part of the Brazilica Festival, I am still very much working hard on keeping the Brazilian Culture alive in Liverpool. We will bring all the costumes back one way or the other as we have plenty of events in the city to showcase them this year with our samba class students, which are launching this year with their own identity The Anahi’s – which in the Amazon indian language Tupi, means Beautiful Sky Flower.

In the year of the Olympics in Rio, 7 British girls are going to Rio and we are bringing back 7 gold costumes…perhaps it says something on team GB bringing home some gold !!

We welcome, all ages and sex in our weekly samba classes, if you see yourself doing it and even shaking a tail feather in Rio you can join us here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Samba-Class-Liverpool/231187690249484
