The Wombats to headline On the Waterfront 2025 for their biggest hometown show yet
5 days ago
On the Waterfront festival returns in 2025, and it’s shaping up to be the most spectacular year yet as The Wombats are announced as headliners.
The Wombats will take to the stage on Thursday 19 June for their biggest hometown show to date.
As one of Liverpool’s biggest musical acts over the last 20 years, The Wombats aka Matthew ‘Murph’ Murphy, Tord Øverland Knudsen and Dan Haggis, met as teenagers whilst studying at Liverpool Institute of Performing Art.
They emerged as leading lights of the late ‘00’s indie rock scene, with 2007 debut ‘A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation’ featuring hit singles ‘Let’s Dance to Joy Division’, ‘Moving to New York’ and ‘Kill the Director’, and over the years have maintained an incredible momentum.
Their 2011 electro flecked second album ‘This Modern Glitch’ established them as Top 10 chart regulars, whilst 2015’s ‘Glitterbug’ connected with a new generation of fans, especially through TikTok where ‘Greek Tragedy’ became a viral hit.
By 2018, with the release of ‘Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life’ The Wombats were soon playing arenas and in 2022 scored their first Number 1 album ‘Fix Yourself, Not the world’.
Despite their two-decade long career, their music continues to resonate with both loyal and younger audiences, proving their staying power.
Fans don’t have long to wait for their next fix, after a two year wait, their sixth album ‘Oh! The Ocean’ is set for release on 21 February 2025 followed by a UK Arena tour culminating in Liverpool for their biggest homecoming show to date on Thursday 19 June.
Joining the bill are Pale Waves, Sawyer Hill plus more to be announced.
Drummer Dan Haggis said:
“Hey Liverpool!! Think we’d forgotten about you?!! As if! We’re so excited to announce that we’re playing a huge hometown show, back where it all began, on the 19 June 2025!!
“The Mersey and Liver Buildings will provide the backdrop, we’ll provide the tunes. It’s going to be a special night full of new music from our upcoming 6th album and of course a load of old bangers…so grab yourself a ticket, polish up those dancing shoes and we’ll see you there! The ‘Bats.”
Set against the stunning backdrop of Liverpool’s iconic waterfront, framed by the Three Graces and the River Mersey, there are few locations more fitting for this much-loved trio to perform.
On the Waterfront 2025 promises to be an unforgettable weekend of live music, with The Wombats homecoming show set to be a true highlight.
