We chat to 90’s pop legend Whigfield ahead of Reminisce Festival 2019
5 years ago
Dee-dee na-na-na! 90’s pop legend Whigfield joins more than 150 acts at Sherdley Park this September for a Saturday Night like no other.
Reminisce Festival returns to Sherdley Park on Saturday 7th September 2019 and the line up includes ‘Saturday Night’ pop sensation Whigfield. It may have been 25 years since she topped the UK charts with her catchy lyrics and euro-pop beats, but tickets are flying out to hear it performed live right here on Merseyside by the woman herself.
We caught up with Whigfield, currently in Italy working on an exciting new project, for a natter about learning scouse and being best mates with the Vengaboys.
“I can’t wait to come back to Liverpool. Back in the day everyone knew you couldn’t tour or play in England and not do a gig in Liverpool. I love the accent.”
In the running for honorary scouser status, Whigfield joins a world class line up of 90’s acts including The Vengaboys, D-Ream, Urban Cookie Collective, Angie Brown, Ultra Nate and more. She said: “Anytime there’s a 90’s party, I’m there. It’s like one big family reunion
“We’ve been doing this for 25 years and every time we meet up we sit backstage and chill and chat about our families. I did an Australian tour with The Vengaboys which was really fun.”
Saturday Night topped the UK singles chart in 1994 selling 1.18 million copies and knocking Wet Wet Wet’s ‘Love Is All Around’ off the top spot. What made the track successful? Whigfield explained: “I think its’ because a lot of the songs from the 90’s are kind of like children’s rhymes that you can sing along to, there’s a lot of melody.
“They’re not very complicated songs. I’ve done many festivals with three generations there and even small kids know the words. I think that’s amazing.”
Casting our minds back to the 90’s, one question that came up in The Guide Liverpool HQ office was, why is she called Whigfield? The lady herself explained: “Whigfield is actually a teachers last name. While we were thinking about what we should do with the project, I always thought I wanted to keep my name for myself and so I’ve worked under many different names for different projects.”
Real name Sannie Carlson, Whigfield has continued creating music and producing since hitting the big time with Saturday Night and follow up single Sexy Eyes in the mid-nineties, she said:” When I’ve created house music I’ve used Sannie and when I’m writing for other artists it’s Nan – it’s just an easier way to keep my projects separate.”
Whigfield is bringing her unique style to Sherdley Park! There’s no sign of the signature plaits or dressing gown for her Reminisce performance, Whigfield is stocking up on the talcum powder, Whigfield is donning a latex suit and bringing her Saturday Night A game to Merseyside.
Love a bit of Saturday Night? Well you heard it here first, Whigfield is releasing new music this Autumn!
