Practical Mindfulness in the Workplace tips
- Take a few mindful pauses during your workday, perhaps just after you get off the phone or when arrive somewhere in the car. You could try a “5 Breath Holiday”, where you take a mindful pause for five relaxed breaths.
- When facing a challenging moment, notice the physical sensation of your emotions. Notice any tendency to react sharply to uncomfortable emotions and try to slow down or “breathe into” difficult sensations. This can help us to “respond”, instead of “react” to challenging experiences.
- When we avoid work tasks, there’s often an emotional charge to that avoidance. Bringing awareness, acceptance, and friendliness towards what we’re experiencing can help us to move past emotionally charged avoidance and engage more fully with the task.
- Being fully present with work or conversations can be difficult. The mind wanders and can get easily distracted. In mindfulness, we practice noticing what’s happening in our mind, without judgement. When you get distracted, try just noticing it, without judgement. Then bring your attention back to the task. Sometimes it might not feel so simple, which usually means there’s something in our emotional or physical experience asking for attention.
- Be honest if you don’t understand something. Ask for help if you need it. Allow yourself to make mistakes.
