Southport’s Big Top Festival

All the spectacle of the circus, with world-class performances, clowning, street theatre, hands-on workshops and loads of family-friendly fun comes to Southport this bank holiday weekend. It’s happening Saturday and Sunday, 11am-6pm, across five festival zones, and it’s all absolutely free!

Liverpool Comic Con

Expect thousands of fans in amazing costumes on the waterfront this Saturday and Sunday when Comic Con returns to Liverpool Experience Campus, with sets and props, cosplay, gaming and star appearances from Stranger Things’ Noah Schnapp, Caleb McLoughlin and Cara Buono, Dr Who Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Gillian Anderson and many more.

Miss Saigon continues

This brand new production of the legendary musical Miss Saigon has been getting incredible audience reactions at the Empire since it opened. A tragic love story set against the Vietnam war, it’s got a superb cast including Seann Miley Moore who gives a wow performance as The Engineer. On until Saturday.

It’s a massive weekend for live music with the return of Sound City, the UK’s and one of Europe’s leading independent festivals for new music. More than 150 artists will be performing at 10 city centre venues across two days including Jalen Ngonda who’s headlining at the Dome, Grand Central on Sunday and Keo on the Saturday.

Conteh continues

Conteh

Boxer John Conteh rose from a promising Kirkby teen fighter to become light heavyweight champion of the world in the ‘70s, but his life after success wasn’t without struggles and this play, written by Aron Julius who also takes the lead, tells it all in a powerful pull-no-punches way. At the Royal Court to May 9.

Single White Female at the Playhouse

Single White Female - Liverpool Playhouse Everyhouse

The film starring Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh was a huge hit thriller in the ‘90s, now the super-tense story of a woman and her dangerously obsessed flatmate has been adapted for the stage with Lisa Faulkner and Kym Marsh as the leads. Get ready for a nailbiter, at the Playhouse from Tuesday.

Buyers Club, just off the top of Hardman Street, is one of the best places to be especially when the sun’s shining because it’s got a great front beer garden with lots of bench seating and outdoor lights. Smithdown Festival is back for the bank holiday with a weekend absolutely packed with live music and DJs at venues up and down Smithdown Road including Handyman’s, Black Cat. Luminous, Beeswing, Bean There and more. Raising money for The Whitechapel Centre, it’s on May 1-4 and it’s all free entry.
