6 reasons to visit Tate Liverpool – Liverpool BID Company’s latest Business of the Month
9 months ago
Tate Liverpool’s waterfront venue at the Royal Albert Dock might be closed for a couple of years while it undergoes its huge transformation to create a new and even more dynamic space – but that doesn’t mean it’s not still around to show some of the best contemporary art to Merseyside and its visitors.
In fact, the awe-inspiring Tate Liverpool has just been nominated as Liverpool BID Company’s Business of the Month for March.
“And as well as highlighting what an amazing all-year-round attraction this is for everyone, it’s partly to remind people that, although the main gallery is closed, people can still visit Tate Liverpool in its new and temporary home at Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) North, Mann Island,” says Beth Locke, engagement manager for Liverpool BID Company.
“It’s just a five-minute walk away from its real home where it’s given people the chance to see some amazing art and exhibitions for the last 35 years.
“And visitors can still enjoy the same thought-provoking works – and enjoy a cuppa and one of the best scones in the city in the café!”
And so while we can all look forward to better yet to come – we can still enjoy it now.
It’s easy to get your Tate Liverpool fix
Although the building we all know and love at the Royal Albert Dock is closed Tate Liverpool’s new ‘pop up’ is waiting to welcome you and is open Monday to Sunday between 10am and 5.50pm and admission is free.
Exciting exhibitions
There’s still plenty to see and enjoy with a variety of current exhibitions including:
* Future Forecast – Created by the Greenhouse Project Young Event Producers, a group of young people from Toxteth, this 24-minute film is an imagined vision of the future, where extreme weather conditions have changed the landscape of Liverpool, and the rest of the world. You can see how they predict what the future might look and sound like.
* You Get a Car (Everybody Gets a Car) – An exciting new installation by RESOLVE Collective which has been working with communities across Liverpool to redistribute and re-use material from Tate Liverpool’s site on the Albert Dock. Their work aims to create a sustainable legacy of redistribution which has a positive, long-term impact for the climate and creative aims of community organisations across the city.
Hands on learning activities and workshops
There’s still loads to keep little people busy with regular events and crafts galore including Art Games: Mildred the Gallery Cat. Inspired by the much-loved children’s book about Mildred the Gallery Cat at Tate, there’s a free activity book containing exciting games and challenges to keep youngsters engaged during their visit and beyond.
Talks
Tate and RIBA hold regular events where you get the chance to meet some of the artists responsible for the amazing work on display. It’s a great way of finding out more about it, and perhaps the inspiration behind it.
Fabulous food and drink
Oh my word, there’s a full menu on the way, but already it’s got plenty to get your mouth watering! It has breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea covered with soup, pastries, and granary toasties. You can enjoy mouth-watering cakes and biscuits including lemon drizzle cake, millionaire’s shortbread, scones with jam and cream (and delicious vegan options) and a selection of coffees, teas, and hot chocolates.
Shopping heaven
From books and posters to clothes and jewellery, it’s got loads of lovely things to take home, and add to that homeware from mugs to cushions and coasters, games and gifts, all with art at their heart, Tate Liverpool shop is worth a visit on its own.
