Mrs Danvers Bakery, Gildart Street

With new premises in Liverpool’s fabric district off London Road, Maria Panayiotis has now created Mrs Danvers’ Bakery and Deco Bar. It offers the same fantastic afternoon teas – although they’ve had a revamp with a new Italian pastry chef creating some of the most amazing cakes and pastries – and there’s now a bar and events space so you can have a glass of fizz or gin with your sandwiches and scones, and plan your next party there. It’s also only a short walk from St George’s Hall and St John’s Gardens if you fancy a stroll around one of the city’s most cultural corners.

Cuthbert’s Bakehouse, Mount Pleasant, Liverpool

Matt and Elaine Price founded Cuthbert’s Bakehouse, building their ideas and dream from a scrapbook created through their love of travel and great food. It offers a classic afternoon tea menu with all the homebaked sweet treats you can imagine as well as a lunch menu which includes quiche, burgers and soup of the day. And, if you fancy a trip to the city’s cathedrals – well, you can fit this in on the way there – or back!

Oh Me Oh My, Water Street

One of the loveliest afternoon tea venues in the bright and airy former bank building. You’ll be greeted with polished wooden floors, pendant lights – and lots of welcoming, friendly smiles. You need to book for afternoon tea which includes sandwiches and sausage rolls and delicious cakes and pastries (including carrot cake macaroons and buttermilk scones) as well as that delightful warming brew. You’re not far from the waterfront if a bracing, cobweb clearing walk is also on the menu – and when the weather’s fine, Oh Me Oh My opens its stunning roof garden with some of the best views for you to enjoy.

Enjoy seasonal homemade food and cake while overlooking Thurstaston Common – that’s the invitation from Benty Farm Tearooms and who could refuse? Set within the rolling countryside of the Wirral, it’s become a firm favourite with locals and a magnet for walkers since it opened in December 2014.
