UPDATES: Households in Sefton experience water outage as mains burst

Sefton Borough is currently experience a water outage, with the majority of households being affected.

United Utilities have been in touch with affected households and have set up a water station for people to collect free creates of water bottles.

Update as of 1:30pm.

A spokesperson for Sefton Council said:

“The Council are declaring the water mains burst on Church Road as a major incident. The Council are coordinating with partner agencies to ensure this incident is under control as soon as possible.

“It is essential that our vulnerable residents are provided with water and have the support they need. Council officers are contacting vulnerable people and care homes directly in the affected areas and teams are delivering water to elderly and vulnerable people.

“The Council continues to liaise with and provide support to United Utilities (UU) and are working to open more water bottle distribution centres as a matter of urgency.

“The site remains under United Utilities care and we encourage residents to contact UU directly for information on water distribution and compensation, either by calling 03456723723 or https://www.unitedutilities.com/emergencies/up-my-street/l21-liverpool/”

As of 12:23pm, United Utilities has given an update:

“We’re well under way with replacing the 5.5 section of the 24 inch pipe. When it is repaired we will then need to re-fill the pipe with water before it can come back into supply.

“We expect the work to be ongoing throughout the afternoon, but we will provide further updates when they are available.”

“Please note, we will proactively contact and automatically pay any customer entitled to compensation so customers don’t need to get in touch with us directly about this.”

More water has now arrived at Sainsbury's Crosby, but the queue is still very long.

A second water station has now been set up at Sainsbury’s in Crosby and will be giving out crates of bottled water to any households affected.

An update from has stated that postcodes affected are L21, L22, L23, L30, L20 and L72.

“A large section of the pipe is being replaced and this requires significant excavation and to work safely around other services.”

A spokesperson for Sefton Council said:

“One of the water mains on Church Road burst in the early hours of Saturday (23rd July) morning.

“United Utilities staff are at the site and will be working through the night to make the necessary repairs.

”Residents can get the latest update by checking the United Utilities website.

“The repairs may take some time so United Utilities are bringing in water from other areas of the network and using water tankers to help with this so they can get water to taps.

”United Utilities hope to be able to get water flowing for the majority of residents in the next few hours, some will be affected for longer but will be kept updated on progress.

”In the meantime, United Utilities have a bottle water station set up at Netherton Activity Centre, Glovers Lane, L30 3TL that will be there until 21:30.

”A section of Dunnings Bridge Road was closed earlier today as a result of the burst water mains. People travelling in the area are advised to plan their route.”
