Klopp poem by Liverpool writer Sean Cullen has had fans across the world in tears

An emotional poem about Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has had fans across the world in tears.

‘Our Klopp’ has been written by Sean Cullen, a well-known local writer, creative and director, to thank the football giant for all he’s done for the team and the city.

And Sean, a huge LFC fan, says he’s been amazed and overwhelmed by the response to it already:

“I put it out a couple of weeks ago and I’ve had fans all over the world saying how emotional it got them, and how it moved them to tears,” says Sean.

“They have said it summed up how everyone’s feeling; the reaction’s just been brilliant.”

Dad-of-two Sean – he and wife, voiceover artist Catherine Turgoose have two young daughters – says he was moved to write the poem in homage to the German footballing legend who took over at Anfield in October 2015.

The 44-year-old who’s originally from Wavertree, adds:

“Being a fan I knew how Klopp had and has ingrained himself within the club and with the city.

“It’s all the stuff he’s done outside the club and the team too, the charity stuff.

“We are a very welcoming city and when people come and embrace it, and us, like Klopp has, that’s a big deal.

“We have seen this nice, genuine, and sincere guy, who was given the Freedom of the City, and I just started writing it to him, to say thank you.”

Like everyone, Sean was surprised when Jurgen Klopp revealed his departure at the end of the season in January.

“When he announced he was going it was a shock for everyone. We knew it would happen, but we didn’t see it coming at that particular time.

“We were doing well again, and we just didn’t expect it.”

The poem is a look-back on Klopp’s near nine-year reign at the club as it prepares to embark on a new chapter without him.

“This is a reflection of his time, a condensed version of what he’s done,” explains Sean. “It’s been such a whirlwind, in a good way.

“The idea was to look back at all those trophies he’s won and put it down, and it takes you on a little journey, an emotional journey, which I’ve hopefully done quite well.

“It was hard, there are so many moments which have been fantastic but I had to cherry pick the best ones, like the Barcelona 4-0 game: but it’s not always about the trophies either. It’s been his career, getting the key to the city, and bringing on the youth team which won the League Cup recently.

“And it’s about him being a nice guy and saying thanks at the end. He cares so much. Being from the city I’m quite a people person and we absorb people’s energy, and I think Klopp has come from a similar background.

“He’s a people centric person, arm round you and give-you-a-hug sort of person, and that’s really important. Men didn’t used to express how they felt but to see him with the players was amazing, with guys like Henderson who travelled across the country and left family at 20 years of age, living on his own in a high-pressure situation.

“To have someone like that put their arm around you and galvanise you and be there for you as a father figure was everything, he understands and he cares, on the pitch and off. There’s that connection for people.”

Sean is hoping to widen the reach of his poem even further and looking at getting it projected onto a building either in Liverpool city centre or Anfield itself.

“I know Klopp doesn’t want a big hoo-ha about him leaving but he did say there would be a time and a place and, hopefully, the end of the season is when it will be, and to get the poem projected onto a building so everyone can see it would be great. I’m working on that.

“It’s not about saying look at me and what I’ve done, but saying thank you to this man for all he’s done, so he can see the appreciation and absorb it.

“It would be lovely for Klopp to see it or hear it too – now that would be amazing.”
