Residents in Merseyside are being urged to stay extra vigilant when using ATMs after skimming devices, which criminals use to steal cash and account details, were discovered at several cash machines across the region.

There has been a rise in reports of ATM fraud, particularly in St Helens, with police seizing devices in key locations.

On Wednesday 12 February, there were reports of skimming devices being found at ATMs at Four Acre Lane in Clock Face and Liverpool Road in Formby and the equipment was seized for forensic examination.

On 27 January, a skimming device was recovered from a bank ATM on Allerton Road.

Detective Inspector Paul Gillies said:

“We are investigating reports of ATM machines that have been tampered with and now want to raise awareness to our communities.”

“The reports have caused concern as the ATM tampering has also seen in other forces in the UK.

“It is important that users of ATMs remain vigilant and look out for the signs that an ATM they are using may have been targeted in this way.

“It’s always a good idea to scan the area around ATMs before you use them particularly where the card goes into the machine.

“Be aware of anyone standing close by and always check the machine to see if it may have been tampered with before you use it.

“If thieves are operating close by, they will watch as you key in your PIN or distract you while you’re withdrawing cash. So remember to cover your PIN and keep an eye on your card at all times. If someone taps you on the shoulder or tries to speak to you, just ignore them.

“Look out for unusual and unexpected devices attached to the machine – some are more obvious than others – and if you do see something suspicious, please contact the police and the bank so that action can be taken to protect customers.

“Remember, if it doesn’t look or feel right then steer clear and, if possible, go inside the bank where it will be safer. And always keep a regular check on your transactions.

“When you’ve left the ATM, put your card away immediately.”

Should any devices be found, please either report to : https://reporting.actionfraud.police.uk or call 101.
