Celebrating Culinary Excellence: Art School’s Paul Askew Inaugurated as President of Disciples Escoffier UK

On Tuesday evening, Westminster Kingsway College in London hosted a dazzling Annual Dinner for Disciples Escoffier, celebrating gastronomy while inaugurating and fundraising for the esteemed organisation. The event welcomed 24 new members from around the globe, bringing together over 120 guests, including renowned chefs and culinary figures, for an evening of festivity and inspiration.

A standout moment came for Liverpool’s own Paul Askew, Chef Patron of The Art School, as he was officially inaugurated as President of Disciples Escoffier UK. Having become a Disciple himself in March 2023, Paul now steps into this prestigious role with a vision to modernize the organization. His goals include promoting diversity, mentoring the next generation of chefs, and raising funds for international competitions and exchange programs.

“I am truly honoured to be inaugurated as President of Disciples Escoffier UK,” Paul expressed. “Throughout my 43-year career in gastronomy, I have remained dedicated to nurturing culinary talent, working sustainably, and championing Liverpool’s vibrant food scene. Last night was incredibly special for me and my family. I’m excited about the opportunities ahead, particularly in helping the North thrive with Disciples Escoffier-led initiatives. A heartfelt thank you to everyone at Disciples Escoffier International for their warm welcome since 2023 and as I embark on this new chapter in 2025. There’s much work to be done!”

As President, Paul will represent the UK among a network of 45 countries and over 10,000 members worldwide. Established in 1954, Disciples Escoffier unites gastronomes from across the globe. The event featured distinguished guests, including Marc Whitley, Lionel Strub, Michel Escoffier, Guillaume Gomez, and many other notable Disciples.

Michael Coaker, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Arts and a member of Disciples Escoffier, expressed his enthusiasm for Paul’s presidency: “We are excited to welcome a new era with Paul at the helm. His extensive culinary experience and innovative approach will undoubtedly usher in fresh perspectives on classical French cuisine in Britain. With initiatives like ‘Young Talent Escoffier,’ we’re poised to spotlight the future of hospitality talent.”

Lionel Strub, Secretary of Disciples Escoffier UK, echoed these sentiments: “Paul embodies everything we need to lead us into this new chapter. His understanding of our history and commitment to training the next generation of chefs is invaluable. As we welcome 24 new Disciples, we are eager to support Paul in modernizing and reforming our community.”

Paul Askew is a leading figure in the UK’s hospitality scene. As Chef Patron at The Art School since its opening in September 2014, he and his team bring together classic and innovative fine dining while mentoring many talented young chefs. His dedication to elevating Liverpool’s gastronomic reputation is unwavering.

In addition to his responsibilities at The Art School, Paul is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts and serves as their Chairman for the North of England. His culinary achievements include cooking for the G7 delegation and recreating The Art School experience at The Grand National.
