Business is choc-ka for the Wirral baker whose cake was voted Britain’s best

Sales have tripled for Wirral bakery Abba Cakes, whose signature chocolate cake was voted Britain’s best.

Laura Johnson, who owns Abba Cakes in Hoylake, says she has been inundated with sweet-toothed customers after news of her success in Britain’s Best Cake Competition 2025.

The mum-of-one won the coveted Best Cake prize in the contest hosted by British Baker for a very special chocolate cake inspired by her Colombian roots, and she says: “It’s been the busiest we have ever been since we opened two and a half years ago.

“I think sales have tripled, or even quadrupled, in the days since we won, with people coming from all over.”

The cake – named THE Chocolate Cake because that’s what people ask for – is sold in slices with 10 pieces cut from each cake: “And on one day alone we sold 10 whole cakes, as well as lots of other cakes and brownies,” she smiles.

“We weren’t prepared for that and we bake everything fresh, but I have a great team and we just said let’s do it. I love it.

“The most often repeated phrase when people taste the cake is ‘oh my word’ because they say it’s so delicious.”

It is a dream come true for the young baker who revealed it was only at the beginning of the year that she was worried about how things were going.

“We’d had a really hard time and things were difficult financially, and I remember praying to God asking ‘what am I going to do?’. Am I going to make it?

“It is a prayer answered and came as a surprise.

“And it also shows that hard work pays off.”

Laura, 33, whose maiden name was Alejandra, created the cake for her wedding to Bebington-born husband Sam.  He’s now a youth pastor, but he was a teacher in Gran Canaria when she met him while training in Spain.

She continues: “It was the first time both of our families were meeting and so I wanted to do something special, and so I made that cake.

“It is made with a rich double chocolate ganache, dark chocolate sponge, and a layer of dulce de leche using a popular Latin American recipe made with butter, sugar, milk, and extra cream.

“In Colombia we don’t make those kind of cakes so, when I was little, I loved British cakes and bakes and I always thought they were so pretty.

“When I went to study I wanted to make sure that the cakes I learned were like those I’d seen.”

Laura, who has a seven-month-old daughter Gabriella, says she is thrilled with the response to The Chocolate Cake which many have since said is not the best cake in Britain ‘but the best in the world’!

“It’s not just about making big profits but creating excellent products.”

Laura revealed she’s making an extra special and even more delicious version of The Chocolate Cake for Easter, topped with nests made from more of that creamy chocolate ganache which are then filled with chocolate eggs.

And she reckons it tastes so good because there’s an extra something added to each mouthful.

“Because of why I made The Chocolate Cake, it comes from the heart,” says Laura.

“So as well as the very best ingredients, each cake contains a lot of love.”
