Hoylake RNLI rescue lone sailor after yacht engine failure
2 months ago

Hoylake RNLI lifeboat crews launched on Monday 18 August after a sailor’s yacht broke down in rough seas near the River Mersey.
The 29ft vessel had lost engine power in poor weather and was drifting close to busy shipping lanes and the Burbo Bank Offshore Wind Farm. HM Coastguard requested Hoylake RNLI’s Shannon class lifeboat, which reached the yacht within 20 minutes.
With conditions worsening and the tide against him, crews decided the safest option was to tow the yacht. Support also came from New Brighton RNLI, who helped secure the vessel to a safe mooring before bringing the sailor ashore to Liverpool’s Landing Stage.
Hoylake RNLI Coxswain Howie Owen said mechanical failure is one of the leading causes of call-outs, making up around 20% of launches. He praised the sailor for raising the alarm quickly: “In the challenging conditions, the casualty made the right decision, particularly as he was sailing alone.”
The RNLI is reminding anyone heading out to sea to check their kit and know how to call for help on VHF Channel 16 or by dialling 999.
