An acclaimed Royal Shakespeare Company production of W. Somerset Maugham’s comedy The Constant Wife is heading to Liverpool Playhouse this March, starring Kara Tointon in the lead role.

The production runs from Tuesday 10 to Saturday 14 March and is adapted by Olivier Award winner Laura Wade, known for Home, I’m Darling and TV drama Rivals. It also features original music by multi award-winning jazz musician Jamie Cullum.

Set in 1920s upper-middle-class London, the play explores marriage, social expectations and personal independence through sharp humour and wit. The story unfolds in an elegant, art deco inspired drawing room that reflects the style and manners of the era.

Kara Tointon, whose previous credits include Mr Selfridge, Twelfth Night for the RSC and The Windsors: Endgame, plays Constance, a woman whose life is changed by a discovery that forces her to reassess her marriage and her future. Speaking about the role, Tointon said the play left her feeling proud to be a woman, describing it as both emotional and funny.

She is joined by Tim Delap as Constance’s husband John, alongside Jules Brown, Gloria Onitiri, Alex Mugnaioni, Philip Rham, Amy Vicary-Smith and Olivier Award winner Sara Crowe. The wider cast includes Sam Flint, Jocasta King and Jane Lambert.

The production is directed by Tamara Harvey, Co-Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Jamie Cullum makes his theatre composing debut with an original score. Set and co-costume design is by Anna Fleischle with Cat Fuller, lighting design by Sally Ferguson and sound design by Claire Windsor.

The Constant Wife runs at Liverpool Playhouse from 10 to 14 March.

Tickets are available via the Everyman and Playhouse website.
