Liverpool’s Royal Court prepares to welcome new comedy Take Me Home County Road

Rehearsals are officially underway for Take Me Home County Road, the brand new comedy from Liverpool actor and writer Adam McCoy, ahead of its world premiere at Liverpool’s Royal Court later this month.

Directed by Emma Bird, the production stars Royal Court favourites Eithne Browne, Helen Carter, Adam McCoy, Keddy Sutton and Lenny Wood. While audiences will know Adam from many performances on the Royal Court stage, this marks his debut as a playwright at the city’s biggest producing theatre.

At the heart of the story is Shelley, played by Helen Carter, a proud County Road girl who’s always believed she was destined for something bigger.

Once full of dreams of becoming a country music star, life has taken a different direction. She’s got a steady job, great mates and a dependable husband in Mick, but she can’t shake the feeling that she’s meant to be on stage.

Now, she’s setting off on a hilarious journey from Wavertree to Tennessee, or at least somewhere close, convinced she’s got what it takes to become the North West’s greatest Country and Western singer. Better than Dolly Garston, better than Garth TueBrooks and definitely better than Manc Williams.

Packed with comedy, music and plenty of Liverpool humour, Take Me Home County Road promises a feel good night out celebrating dreams, friendship and the people who make a place feel like home.

Adam McCoy said:

“We’re having so much fun putting this show together. It’s definitely a surreal feeling seeing your words and characters come to life in front of you, and I feel incredibly privileged and very thankful that it’s all in such safe hands with this amazing cast, creative team and stage management team.

“Music has always been such an important part of this story for me, so it’s been really exciting to watch James Breckon put his own stamp on the songs. Alongside Emma Bird’s direction, it’s been amazing to see all the different elements gradually come together in rehearsals.

“I’m definitely a bit nervous, especially as I’m in the show too, but more than anything I can’t wait for audiences to see it. I hope people see a little bit of themselves, or someone they know, in these characters. Whether you’re from Liverpool, County Road or beyond, this story is all about community, laughter and the people who make home feel like home. I hope audiences can escape for a couple of hours and leave the theatre with a big smile on their face.”

Take Me Home County Road opens at Liverpool’s Royal Court later this month, with tickets available now.
