East River’s owner Josh Roberts has recently enjoyed record-breaking weeks at his South Liverpool restaurant, and puts his success down to hard work, quality of food and service.
But the restauranteur also believes that Allerton Road is ungergoing a revival.
Josh, 30, who has worked in the hospitality industry since he was just 14 years old as a kitchen porter, opened the New York inspired restaurant back in November 2018.

“Last winter was quite a challenge for myself and the team – East River was the new kid on the block and we had to work incredibly hard to get our message out there to locals and beyond”, says Josh.
He added: “Now it’s clear what we serve – great quality food and drinks, friendly service and a relaxed but cool atmosphere. Our consistency is bringing people back and we couldn’t be happier. We’ve trebled what we were taking not so long ago.
“The last couple of months have been really successful for us and I strongly believe it’s down to our handwork and determination. We’ve created a new menu and had some brilliant reviews which shows how delicious the food really is.
“But I also believe Allerton Road is on the rise. East River is helping to revive the area as a destination and we’re operating alongside some brilliant businesses including 109 Allerton, Little White Lies, Three Piggies, and Maray, and I’m really excited to see Verdant’s rebrand to Bloom Bar and Bistro.
“It’s a fantastic time for the road which not even a year ago, felt much quieter and in need of a little boost. I think we all offer something different for guests and hope we can be a hub for those visiting South Liverpool.”
Josh is from South Liverpool himself having grown up in Allerton and is incredibly passionate about bringing vibrancy to the popular street.

He’s listened to locals and worked on his menu to ensure he’s offering something for everyone and continues to adapt East River. This summer, Josh launched an evening menu packed with street food and small plates, salads, Buddha bowls and nori bowls. Alongside that runs his standout cocktail menu that includes East River’s signature Mile High Clover Club.
The restaurant’s popular brunch menu – packed with breakfasts, bagels and smoothie bowls – continues to hit the spot for locals.
