This is why the Vivienne Westwood exhibition at The Atkinson is a must-see for all Fashion Fans
5 years ago
Punk rock, political & environmental statements, sky scraper heels, tailoring to die for and more are featured in one man’s collection of all things Vivienne Westwood at The Atkinson this Winter.
The truly impressive collection of Vivienne Westwood clothing, footwear, accessories and more have gone on display at The Atkinson, Southport. Open to view now until late March 2020, Westwood is one man’s personal collection, spanning more than 30 years. The exhibition looks back at her designs and campaigns, illustrating what makes her The Grand Dame of Fashion today.
Most people will know Vivienne Westwood for her thought-provoking designs, environmental activism and famous supermodel tumbles (poor Naomi). One of the last independent global fashion companies, Westwood kick started the punk fashion revolution in the 70’s with Union flag designs and a whole load of safety pins. Cut to 2019 and her tailoring, slogan tees and pirate boots are the most coveted and instantly recognisable items on the market.

Vivienne Westwood carved her own path. She stands up for what she believes in and she’s not afraid to make some noise, join a protest or send men down her catwalk wearing fake breasts. In short, we adore her. From dressing the Sex Pistols to speaking out about human rights issues, British Fashion Awards, designing Carrie’s incredible wedding dress in Sex and The City to protesting climate change at St Paul’s Cathedral – Vivienne Westwood is so much more than a world class fashion designer.
Westwood at The Atkinson has been made possible thanks to the collection of a super fan. Malcolm Garrett is one of the worlds most respected graphic designers who has been amassing Vivienne Westwood material for more than 30 years.
Alongside the clothing, shoes and accessories, Westwood curator Joanne Chamberlain sourced items from another local collector. Chris is the manager of the Vivienne Westwood boutique store in Liverpool and has added a number of one off items, including fascinating Westwood fashion clippings and a huge canvas to the exhibition.
