He reflected on his journey from starting as a footman at Buckingham Palace before becoming Queen Elizabeth II’s personal footman and later serving as butler to the then Prince and Princess of Wales.
Following the separation of the Prince and Princess of Wales, Paul became Princess Diana’s personal butler, trusted confidant and close friend, remaining by her side until her death in 1997.
Guests heard personal memories of Princess Diana, as well as stories from Paul’s years serving Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles III and Princes William and Harry.
Paul also spoke candidly about life after leaving royal service, including his health challenges, legal battles and the intense media attention he has experienced over the years. He was joined at the event by his husband, Graham Cooper.
During the afternoon, Paul shared his affection for Liverpool and revealed it has always held a special place for him saying:
“We absolutely loved Friday’s book launch. The people of Liverpool are always so kind and welcoming and we simply love the city.

“At one point we even considered making Liverpool our home. It’s always a pleasure to come back and experience the warmth, culture, architecture and incredible people that make the city so special.”
Making the most of their visit, Paul and Graham stayed in the penthouse suite at Ropewalks Hotel, enjoying panoramic views across the city skyline before dining at CasaCillo on Duke Street.
Carolyn Hughes said:
“I have hosted many book launch events over the years including Patsy Kensit, Alastair Campbell and Davinia Taylor, among many others.
“Paul was an absolute delight and he was genuinely thrilled to be in Liverpool. He very much enjoyed meeting all of the guests who attended. Thanks to the team at Masons for the amazing food and service on the day.”
Since leaving the Royal Household, Paul has become an internationally recognised author, broadcaster and public speaker. His books include the number one Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller A Royal Duty, which has sold more than three million copies worldwide.
His latest memoir, The Royal Insider: My Life with the Queen, the King and Princess Diana, also became an instant Sunday Times bestseller.
