A Food Lovers Guide to October in Liverpool

We’ve done a relatively good job of fighting off the coming winter so far, meaning that we can hold on to a little bit of the sun through our love of food and drink with this month offering tapas and gin to keep away those winter blues.

We’re sure that as the season draws in comfort food will be much needed – top of anyone’s list. However, we’re going to enjoy a tipple of gin, a small plate of some East Asian cuisine and a selection of tapas before that point arrives.

Foodie Event of the Month – Gin Party in the Palm House – 20th & 21st October

Yes, not strictly food, but… A Gin Party in Sefton Park’s picturesque Palm House? Come on. We’re told to expect music, dancing, food and, of course, gin. Upon arrival you will be given your very own branded gin balloon. Don’t lose it as it is yours to keep throughout the festival and to take home.

You will be spoilt for choice with 20+ different boutique gins to choose from, if you’re stuck, consult your festival guide in which you will find tasting notes for all of the gins available.

There will be food from a local provider, payable with cash at the event. And if you get tired of gin (we don’t see how you could!) there will some wine, beers, and soft drinks available too.

Then sit back and enjoy some live music and entertainment in the beautiful surroundings.

For tickets head to eventbrite here.

New venue of the month – Lock & Key Hotel, Bar & Kitchen, Duke Street

Prepare to make Duke Street your new favourite hang-out as stunning new boutique hotel, bar & kitchen, Lock & Key has thrown open its doors in Liverpool. If you’re a fan of decadent settings, sweeping staircases, original décor with modern, quirky twists, plus sumptuous menus designed by local chefs, craft beers and themed cocktails, you’re going to love Lock & Key.

The newest name to join the every growing Duke Street social scene is open from 8am-12am daily and offers a breakfast and lunch menu designed by local chef Jen Peers, until 5pm leading onto gourmet bar snacks available throughout the evening. Maintaining its dedication to local suppliers and producers, coffee and cakes from Neighbourhood Coffee and Midnight Delivery are also available throughout the day. (See other image above)

Visit the website for more info.

Fav Foodie Tweet – Amalia Restaurant

Amalia offers the finest of contemporary Italian cuisine in elegant and comfortable surroundings in the middle of Duke Street. They were recently crowned winners at the Liverpool Food and Drink Awards 2017 for ‘Best Place to Eat’ – Congrats guys and we will be in for a bowl of pasta very soon!

Must Visit Venue of the Month – Tiger Rock Hawker

With sites on Smithdown Road and the City Centre, Tiger Rock Hawker is up for the challenge of competing with oriental offerings already in the city, and is doing a damn fine job at that. Driven by their passion for deliciously fresh East Asian cooking, both sites offer the best in Thai, Chinese, Malaysian, Singaporean, Vietnamese and Laotian dishes, all served with a twist. If that’s not enough for you then take a look at their gin menu to accompany the selection of small plates and larger bowls. Just take a look at the menu to be blown away by the choice and quality of the food on offer.

Visit the Tiger Rock website here.

Quaint and Quirky Cafe – Ryde Cafe

We’re changing up the food guide this month as we thought that we should tell you about the some of Merseyside’s best cafés. Coffee shop culture is as big as it has ever been and Liverpool has some of the best around. This month we want to tell you about Ryde, situated in Cains Brewery. The shop that sits opposite The Baltic Market is rustic yet quaint, quality yet affordable. The site doubles up as a bike repair shop making it all the more interesting a quirky as you set up with an avocado brunch and an oat milk flat white. We couldn’t recommend it more.

Visit the Ryde Liverpool menu here.

Vegan/Veggie Venue of the Month – Hafla Hafla

As the now called, Flexiterian diet, becomes increasingly popular, so are the chefs and restaurateurs having to develop. This month’s pick goes out to the Veggie’s, the cheese eaters, sorry Vegans. Hafla Hafla specialise in halloumi fries and are delivering them right to your taste buds in the cities newest foody attraction, The Baltic Market, a market that frequently changes up stall vendors. However, when it came time for Hafla Hafla to leave, the market couldn’t let them go, even building them their own stall. So there you have it, halloumi fries are here to stay, unless, of course, we eat them all!

Eatery of the Month – Neon Jamon

Neon Jamon seemed to do a great job of blending into Berry Street without people giving it a second thought, it was as if it had been there forever. However, for fans of hearty, Spanish taps, this little piggy is a must visit. Another local business that moved to the City Centre from Smithdown Road, the choice is second to none with the pork being a must eat. As gorgeous as tapas are, it can quickly add up, and that is why they offer a 2 for £10 option, 12pm – 5pm during the week. Dig in to a selection of meat, cheese and fish, as well as charcuteria, an unrivalled selection of cured meats.

Full menu and bookings on the Neon Jamon website here.
