Bombed Out Church announces more events as it celebrates opening success

After a long cold January, Valentine’s Day and the Chinese New Year saw St Luke’s ‘Bombed Out’ Church kick-off 2018 with a series of jam packed events.

Valentine’s Day saw the start of St Luke’s 3 successful nights showcasing American and Chinese cinema with a sell-out showing of the romantic classic ‘Casablanca’. This was followed by ‘In the Mood for Love’, a Chinese film with Cantonese subtitles on Friday 16th February, and the Bruce Lee classic ‘Enter the Dragon’ on Saturday 17th February.

Sunday’s winter sun saw 15,000 guests attending a food market held in the Church gardens hosted by Bond Events. With a stage for local acoustic performers to showcase their talents, the market was a great success. In keeping with the city’s Chinese New Year celebrations, staff at Kwok Wing Foods stall were kept particularly busy as attendees flocked to sample the Chinese delicacies on offer.

Bond Events will be back the last Sunday of the every month throughout 2018 with a different themed food market. More information on the next market’s theme, held on Sunday 25th March, will be released in the coming weeks.

Running alongside Sunday’s food market, 2,000 guests attended a children’s craft stall and drumming session within the Church. A dedicated team of St Luke’s volunteers oversaw the Chinese New Year themed craft stall, helping guests make Chinese style masks and hosting a variety of games. Curator and Artistic Director, Ambrose Reynolds and volunteers Mick and Martin led the hugely popular drumming session which saw members of the public pick up sticks and join in with rhythmic drumming. This was so well received that plans are already being made for another drumming session, so keep your eyes peeled!

2018 is set to by a busy year for St Luke’s as it continues to celebrate its re-opening to the public under the community-based company, Bombed Out Church Ltd, and as it re-affirms its status as an events hub within the city.

Upcoming events include a special Women’s Open Mic night on 9th March and performances by SOSO, an all-female choir, on 11th March, all in celebration of International Women’s Day.

More information on these events, and many more, can be found on St Luke’s official website www.bombedoutchurch.com.
