Western Approaches HQ is a hidden gem in the city centre also know as the Liverpool War Museum. It was the underground command center for the Battle of the Atlantic.
On 7 February 1941, Combined Operations moved to Derby House at Exchange Flags because German aircraft and U-boats were attacking ships travelling in from the continent. The department became known as Western Approaches Command as it monitored Western Approaches, the rectangular area of the Atlantic Ocean lying immediately to the west of the British Isles. Liverpool subsequently became an important strategic position in the Second World War.
It is still open and you can book your place for the experience now. Social distancing is in place and other measures all within government guidelines. It is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am – 5pm.
You will get a free glass of wine or beer for any adult visiting the Museum from Wednesday 21st October until 14th November.
