EDITOR’S PICKS: 11 things to do this weekend in Liverpool

We made it! Pay Weekend and the end of a very long month has arrived and, of course, there’s tonnes on offer in the city to help you celebrate.

It’s Jay here back with a few ideas on what you can get up to this weekend in the greatest city on the planet. You can listen in to the full round up below taken from my weekly chat with Steve Hothersall on Radio City Talk.

For the beer lovers…

Winter Ale Festival, St George’s Hall

I’m off to sample some real ales on Saturday as the Winter Ale Festival returns to St George’s Hall. Over 200 different beers to tuck into, an indoor gin garden with Liverpool Gin, live music from classical singer, Daniele Thomas and tasty food, including Scouse!
Best of all though it’s set in our stunning St George’s Hall. There are two sittings today and again tomorrow (Saturday). Watch above as I meet Sophie & Dan from the Real Ale Events team to find out more. See you there.

Book your tickets via Eventbrite here.

For Breakfast…

Lock & Key, Duke St

Tried Lock & Key on Duke Street yet? Having only opened in Autumn it is already a firm favourite for food and drink lovers in the city, whether you are starting off your night with cocktails at the bar, or starting off your day with the perfect breakfast, Lock and Key has something for you. The Veggie Breakfast with its grilled halloumi and asparagus spears, is perfect for that early morning boost. Full English, continental, eggs & avocado, pancakes and smoothies also available.

More info and full menu this way.

For lunch…

Can you believe Casa Italia on Stanley Street has been serving the city for over 40 years? Famous for its personable service, generous portions and affordable prices. The Veggie Lasagne is top of my list on the menu, pizzas are freshly cooked, and the signature dish is Foccacia Bread, drizzled with home made garlic butter. Go support this local, family run business and give a cheers to the next 40 years.

Book your table and check out the menu here.

For dinner…

We all love a good Sunday roast in Liverpool and this weekend Maray on Allerton Road launches its brand new Sunday menu which includes a choice of four of them. Cumbrian Ham, Goosnargh Corn-Fed Chicken, Cumbrian Beef and Butternut Squash & Pistachio nut roast. Served between 1-7pm this and every Sunday.

For more info head to the website here.

For a drink…

I’ve become a bit of a regular at Three Piggies on Allerton Road in recent months. And with its laid back, cosy community feel, you should too! Quiz nights every Wednesday, live music on Sundays with the incredible Chris McIntosh, a delicious food menu which includes the ever popular deli boards, great cocktails and ice cold pint glasses – with red stripe on draft! What more could you want from your local?

Head  to the website for more info here.

For a drink drink…

Tonight (Friday) Hilton Liverpool launches its new regular funky Friday nights with Studio 54. If you love disco, souls and funk then give it a whirl. Surely one of the classiest and swankiest venues in the city, with service and atmosphere always on point.

Book your tickets for tonight’s party here.

For Tequila…

There’s a new bar opening on Wood Street this Saturday and the launch is all a bit mysterious. When the invites are actual bottles of Tequila though you can’t really turn them down. The bar is called Dirty Little Secret and is billed as a secret destination cocktail bar. Enquiries and bookings have gone through the roof and I can’t wait to see what’s in store on Saturday.

Get following the action as the bar opens on their Facebook page.

For a boogie…

Garlands returns!

It’s back! The return to one of the greatest Scouse clubs ever! Garlands Gathering will take place on Saturday 27th January, in the clubs former home, Brickworks on Eberle Street. Expect the same outrageous antics, wildly dressed entertainers, crazy props and of course some of the best funky tunes in club land.

For your Take That fix…

The fastest selling UK musical of all time has landed in Liverpool. The Band takes you back to 1992 and celebrates the music of everyone’s guilty pleasure, Take That. Our Kate gave it 6 out of 5 and met the lads who star to quiz them all things Gary, Mark, Robbie, Howard & Jason.

Book your tickets here, the show runs until 3rd February.

For some live music…

It’s all about the locals on Sunday evening at 81 Renshaw with electronic soul artist Sub Blue leading the way. One of the city’s hottest music talents who is certainly on the way up. He’s supported by Raheem Alaheem and New Jr the night is presented by Out of Context and some tickets still available.

Book your tickets here.

On Telly…

I’m smashing through Power on Netflix at the moment, the American Crime-Thriller produced by 50 Cent. It centres around a New York businessman ‘Ghost’ and the double life he leads. Nightclub boss/ crime lord. Such a well written and gripping show that I promise you’ll love. Box off a full day, push play, and get set for one of the most thrilling TV dramas I’ve seen in ages. G’wed 50 cent!

Shout out…

Love him or hate him you can’t deny that Pete Price is a bit of a legend in these parts. He’s been entertaining, (and shouting at) his radio audiences for over 50 years now and for 7 of them it was me who had the task of producing him. I have a million hilarious memories of working with Pete, most of them involve us having absolute murder at the top of the Radio City Tower. This week not only did he turn 72 but he was also awarded the ‘Citizen of Honour’ by the city of Liverpool. It was a superb night at the Liverpool Town Hall with the likes of Phil Redmond, Les Dennis, Lucy Meacock & another radio legend, Billy Butler all in attendance. A great celebration of Liverpool’s very own lizard legs, Pete Price. Well in Pricey.

Also have to mention someone else close to our hearts in the city and someone else who is good friend of mine, Denise Fergus. This week she launched her book ‘I Let Him Go’ in which she tells her story of a mother who lost her baby boy far too soon, a story we all know too well on Merseyside. I’ve loved getting to know her the past few years and I can honestly say she is one of the sweetest and most genuine people I know and certainly the strongest. I’m looking forward to once again hosting the Evening for James in March for the James Bulger Memorial Trust and I wish her all the very best of luck with her new book, I hope it brings some peace to her and strength to others.

So I’ll keep you posted on what else is happening this weekend over on our Twitter and Facebook pages and of course follow our story too on Instagram here.

Happy payday weekend Liverpool, spend it wisely and have fun
