Liverpool ONE has announced exciting plans for a new Liver Bird themed play area at Chavasse Park.

The new play area will be called ‘The Kingdom of the Liver Bird’, taking its name from the mythical Liver Bird symbol of the city, and will cover approximately 1,010 sq m.

A planning application has now been submitted, with work expected to start early 2027.

The brand-new design will introduce a range of standout features, including:

  • The Liver Bird Tower with Tube Slide – a striking tower feature inspired by the city’s mythical Liver Bird, featuring an integrated tube slide
  • Zipline with Tower – an elevated zipline experience accessed via a dedicated launch tower
  • Fishermen’s Village and Trampoline Area – a vibrant, maritime-inspired play zone with high-energy trampoline features
  • The Castle with Slide – a themed castle structure designed for active climbing, exploration and a sweeping slide feature
  • School of Fish Climbing Structure – an immersive climbing experience inspired by the movement of a school of fish
  • Tunnels and Hills – landscaped play elements supporting exploration, movement and discovery.

The new space will provide a mix of play opportunities for different ages, abilities and backgrounds, with inclusive design embedded throughout and guest feedback having helped to shape and refine the overall concept.

Interactive and sensory play features include communication tubes between towers to encourage social interaction, textured panels for exploration and creative discovery, and integrated musical elements, as well as busy boards, a rotating mirror and play boxes. A range of elevated viewpoints alongside accessible ground-level experiences ensures children can explore and experience the play space in different ways.

A storytelling competition will also be delivered in collaboration with local schools to develop the narrative of the play area and bring to life its journey from water to land – with insights from the competition informing the continued development of the design.

Brendan Hattam, Centre Director at Liverpool ONE, said:

“We’re excited to share plans for this major new play space at Chavasse Park, which will further strengthen Liverpool ONE’s family offering and create even more opportunities to spend quality time together outdoors. ‘The Kingdom of the Liver Bird’ has been designed with local families in mind, encouraging fun-filled experiences inspired by a symbol that sits at the heart of the city’s identity.

“We’re proud to be investing in new family facilities that enhance our offering here and this play area will create a vibrant space for children of all ages to enjoy.”
