Liverpool Cathedral is set to take centre stage for two groundbreaking events which unite science and philosophy this March
The two events will feature a range of accelerator physicists, particle physicists, and theologians from a range of prestigous universities and institutions.
Particle Physics and Accelerators Masterclass at Liverpool Cathedral
Daresbury Laboratory has hosted highly successful annual Particle Physics and Accelerators Masterclasses for many years. This year new ground is being broken by hosting one such event at Daresbury and another in collaboration with the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), Liverpool University Physics Department, and Liverpool Cathedral, bringing cutting-edge Physics research and development to the iconic Liverpool Cathedral. This event, scheduled to take place on the 5th March at Liverpool Cathedral, the largest cathedral in the UK, marks a significant milestone in celebrating the Cathedral’s centenary since its consecration as a place of worship in 1924.
The collaboration between STFC, Liverpool University, and Liverpool Cathedral is a unique initiative that aims to create a world-first experience – a Physics Masterclass conducted within the historic and inspiring environment of a cathedral. This event, complementing the Masterclass at Daresbury Laboratory, is strategically located in the heart of the Northwest and Merseyside regions, ensuring accessibility for schools and colleges in the area.
Liverpool Cathedral, described as a place of Encounter, hosts a wide range of events, from worship services to educational trips, and now, this Particle Physics and Accelerators Masterclass. The cathedral, built by the people for the people, stands as an iconic symbol and landmark in the region.
The Masterclass, led by experts in the field, will delve into the wonders of Physics, focusing on cutting-edge research and development in Particle Physics and Accelerators. Sixth form students from schools and colleges across the region will have the opportunity to learn about the application of these advancements, particularly in Radiation Therapy for the treatment of Cancer. The event aims to inspire and encourage future generations to pursue careers in Physics, engineering, technology, clinical sciences, and therapeutic radiography.
The day’s schedule is structured to provide a comprehensive learning experience, starting with a welcome and introduction from the Revd Canon Dr Mike Kirby, a Senior Lecturer in Radiotherapy Physics and Canon Scientist at Liverpool Cathedral. The Masterclass will feature presentations by esteemed professionals such as Prof Fred Loebinger, Prof Julia Handley, and Prof Carsten Welsch, covering topics ranging from the fundamentals of sub-atomic particles to the application of Proton and Ion Beam Therapy.
The day will also include online tours, group activities, and virtual reality exploration of Radiotherapy using the VERT system. Attendees will have the chance to interact with experts, ask questions, and gain insights into the latest advancements in Physics research and development.

Liverpool Cathedral is set to host a ground-breaking event that transcends traditional boundaries as Accelerator physicists, particle physicists, and theologians come together for a thought-provoking panel discussion titled “Beyond Boundaries: A Dialogue on Science and Faith.”
Scheduled to take place at Liverpool Cathedral, a symbolic venue known for its rich history and architectural grandeur, this unique event aims to explore the common ground between science, philosophy, and religion. The panel members, each a distinguished figure in their respective fields, will engage in an insightful conversation that delves into the intersections of scientific inquiry and matters of faith.
Panel members for the discussion include:
Revd Canon Dr Mike Kirby (University of Liverpool/Liverpool Cathedral). Fr. Andrew Pinsent (University of Oxford). Prof John Ellis (CERN, KCL). Prof Elaine Howard Ecklund (Rice University). Prof Andy Beavis (Vertual Ltd.). Dr Alex Bainbridge (STFC/ASTeC). Dr Kate Shaw (University of Sussex)
The panel discussion will be moderated by Prof Carsten P. Welsch, a distinguished scientist and council member of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). Prof Welsch, affiliated with the University of Liverpool, Cockcroft Institute, and INFN, brings a wealth of expertise in accelerator physics and will guide the conversation as the panel explores the nuances of bridging the gap between science and faith.
The event promises to provide a platform for an open and respectful dialogue, encouraging attendees to gain insights into the perspectives of scientists and theologians alike. The panellists, hailing from diverse backgrounds, will share their views on the compatibility and coexistence of science and faith, fostering a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between these two realms.
“Beyond Boundaries: A Dialogue on Science and Faith” aligns with Liverpool Cathedral’s commitment to being a place of Encounter, where different ideas and perspectives converge. The event is an opportunity for attendees to engage with leading experts, ask questions, and participate in a meaningful discussion that goes beyond conventional boundaries.
All interested individuals, whether from scientific or religious communities, are invited to participate in this enlightening dialogue at Liverpool Cathedral. The event promises to be a unique and enriching experience, facilitating a bridge between the worlds of science and faith.
