Luna New Year: Liverpool dance charity Movema joins forces for events across the city

Movema is collaborating with organisations, local artists and community members for the Lunar New Year 2024 celebrations across the city of Liverpool.

Lunar New Year in Liverpool will take place from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 February, and this year we are also celebrating the 25th anniversary of the city’s twinning with Shanghai!

So get ready for the biggest-ever Lunar New Year celebrations yet, as we get ready to welcome in the Year of the Dragon!

Starting with a flash mob parade on Saturday 3 February at 12pm on Bold Street, Movema dancers will follow the rhythms and movements set by Hung Gar’ Kung Fu’s Lion team.

Creating big and colourful shapes alongside the fierce and beautiful lions to welcome the Lunar New Year. Follow in their footsteps as they make their way through Liverpool city centre, starting on Bold Street and ending on the waterfront.

On Saturday 10 February 12pm – 5pm the celebrations start with a lion’s roar at FACT. 

LESEAN in collaboration with Movema present a full day of free events to mark the first new moon and the first day of spring in the lunar calendar, celebrated in parts of East and South East Asia.

From a Lion Dance and martial arts display to a movement workshop, lantern making, and more—there are plenty of activities for all ages to enjoy.

On Saturday 10 February from 11am – 3pm, Movema dancers will be taking the celebration spirit to The Victoria Gallery & Museum where fun Chinese dance workshops are planned throughout the day for all ages and abilities in the Leggate Theatre space. There will also be Chinese arts and crafts sessions and music led by the Confucius Institute.

On Sunday 11th February at 2pm, 3pm and 4pm look out for the Blue Dragon’s surprise pop up performances across Chinatown, coming alive alongside Movema dancers. 

Co-founder of Movema – Pei Yee Tong said: 

“This year is the year of the dragon, saying goodbye to last year’s Rabbit and welcoming the wood dragon, bringing us all new opportunities, positive changes, luck and success. If you are looking for changes to current situations, this year will be the year to act.”

Movema Community Dancers performing ‘Dragon Kung Fu flow’ on the Great George Square Stage. Sunday 11 February at 3.20pm & 4.15pm – a fusion of Chinese dance and kung fu movements performed by our community dancers who have been dancing together every Monday at artists hub, 24 Hope Street.
 
On Sunday 18 February 11am, 12:30pm & 2pm, Movema in collaboration with The Bluecoat present a wonderful child-friendly performance for Lunar New Year followed by a fun 30-minute dance workshop and craft session for all children and grown-ups to enjoy.
