Run for the 97

More than 1,400 people are getting ready to Run For The 97 to celebrate and honour the lives of the 97 Liverpool Football Club fans who died at Hillsborough on April 15, 1989. The event’s taking place in Stanley Park on Saturday with a 5K fun run starting at 9.30am and a 1-miler setting off at 10.30 – and virtual runners are taking part around the world.

With a theme of ‘Bee Together for people and the planet’ World Bee Day on Wednesday’s designed to highlight the role the humble bee plays in the global food and eco systems – and closer to home Bebe’s Hive CIC is asking everyone to come together ‘in colour, kindness and remembrance for World Bee Day in memory of Bebe King’, wearing a pop of yellow and decorating Southport in the sunny shade.

There are now more places to get your hit of Bus Yard streetfood, drinks and live music after the chilled out venue’s pulled in at Liverpool Waters, Liverpool ONE – Chavasse Park – and Crosby Beach where it all started at the Marine Lake back in 2021. So you can kick back and relax by the water, by the grass, or by the beach.

Summer’s in the air and to celebrate, one of Liverpool’s favourite Italian restaurants has got an amazing new menu so you can taste, as well as feel, the start of a brand-new season.

Think new fab and fresh antipasti offerings like squid, prawn, scallops and scampi salad and a chicken Caesar salad to name just two, and main dish highlights including Tagliolini Crab (tagliolini pasta with crab, tomato, saffron & a touch of cream) and Orzo Risotto Zucca & Salsiccia (orzo risotto with pumpkin cream, fresh sausage & pecorino, finished with truffle oil).

Sunny Afternoon at Liverpool Empire

Well, You Really Got Us with this one! Olivier Award-winning musical Sunny Afternoon is on at the Empire from tomorrow, telling the story of The Kinks’ rise from obscurity in working class Muswell Hill to worldwide fame. It’s the history of the band set to a soundtrack of their era-defining songs like You Really Got me, Lola, and All Day and All of the Night. It’s on until Saturday.

The newly updated Dovedale Towers reopens

The Dovey’s set to open its doors again at noon on Wednesday after being brought back to life by the team behind The Monro, St Peter’s Tavern and The Vines. Like other 1936 Pubco venues it’s going to have ‘a cracking cask ale selection, plenty of stout options, hot pies and live sports on the tellies’.  Dovetale Towers has got an incredible history having previously been an orphanage, a church hall where Paul McCartney performed as a choirboy, and home to the late rock legend Freddie Mercury!

Southport Beer Week

There’ll be not one but six days of celebrations of the town’s pubs and bars from Wednesday and throughout the Bank Holiday weekend. Organised by Southport BID, the focus of Southport Beer Week is a town-wide ale trail, giving people the chance to explore a range of venues, sample cask ales and craft beers, and collect stamps along the way for the chance to win a prize draw.
