Seel Street Bar voted best in Merseyside

A recent addition to Liverpool’s iconic bar scene has been crowned “Best Bar in Merseyside” at the National Pub and Bar Awards.

Mean-Eyed Cat bar on Seel Street, which has cemented itself in the hearts of local partygoers with its no-catch free pizza and Johnny-Cash themed cocktails, was presented with the award over the weekend.

The Liverpool dive bar joins other North West venues – the Cholmondeley Arms in Cheshire, The Swan in Grasmere, Cumbria, BOX in Greater Manchester and Britannia Tap & Grill in Lancashire, in competing for the region-wide and national title in summer, as part of the National Pub and Bar Awards Grand Final on 26th June in London.

Since its launch in March 2023, Mean-Eyed Cat Liverpool – which is well known for its hedonistic vibes, free pizza and roll-the-dice bar game – as well as it’s hidden after-hours Tiki Bar, Tiki Hideaway – has quickly become a much-loved part of the city’s vibrant bar scene.  The bar, which boasts well-crafted cocktails, picklebacks and shots and is open late, is popular with after-work drinkers who are looking for the perfect place to unwind.

The National Pub and Bar awards, which aim to showcase the UK’s finest pubs and bars on a national scale, crown the best venues within 94 counties across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Tristan O’Hana, editor of Pub & Bar magazine which runs the awards scheme commented:

“The fact that we had record entries for the 2024 National Pub & Bar Awards tells us two things. One is how highly the industry regards these accolades, which is fantastic. But, also, it shows that more operators are in need of really positive and strong publicity to help drive business at the moment. Pubs and bars are facing some of the biggest challenges in recent history, so if the National Pub & Bar Awards can help by lifting sales across these venues, then we’re delighted to play our part.”

David Aldred from Escapism Bars, which owns and operates the Mean-Eyed Cat bar, said:

“We are absolutely thrilled beyond measure to have scooped this accolade after only being open in Liverpool for 12 months. It proves that our recipe of well-made, well-priced cocktails, free pizza and ongoing fun promotions have resonated with Liverpool’s city centre workers, party goers and students, too. Thanks to everyone who has visited the venue – and especially thanks to our team of hard working bar staff who make the venue what it is.”
