The Liverpool locations that make The Responder Series Two what it is

The Responder Series Two is available now on IPlayer.

Liverpool based police drama The Responder is back on our screens for a second series, debuting on BBC1 on Sunday night.

Season one drew high praise from critics alongside brilliant viewing figures, and fans were delighted when it was announced the show’s Huyton raised creator Tony Schumacher was returning.

Schumacher says that despite multiple awards and the series becoming a hit around the world, the one thing that matters more than anything to him is the approval of Liverpool people.

Most agree that Martin Freeman has an almost flawless scouse accent as burned out police constable Chris Coleman and location scouts have done a brilliant job finding spots around the city region to film crucial scenes.

Here is our pick of seven locations from The Responder that you might recognise from the show.

Goodison Park and Bramley Moore

Schumacher is an Everton fan and we see lots of nods to the blue side of Merseyside in series two.

Early in episode one his daughter drinks Coke out of a chipped Everton mug and there is also a mirror with the club crest in his estranged dad’s house.

So, it’s no surprise that both Goodison Park and the new Everton Stadium at Bramley Moore dock feature.

A runaway is picked up from across the road from Everton’s current Main Stand, while the new stadium can be seen under construction as Chris and colleague Rachel make their way along the dock road.

Tom’s house in Wavertree

One of the main story threads in series two is the relationship between Chris and his estranged dad Tom, played by the late Bernard Hill, who sadly died shortly before the first episode was aired.

Chris is seen meeting his dad for the first time in years at the older man’s home in Wavertree.

Locals in the area were surprised last year when they spotted filming for The Responder in Strathcona Road and it features in several scenes of the new series.

A new apartment in Blundellsands

Down on his luck Chris has always danced with the wrong side of the law and despite trying to go straight in this season we see him getting drawn in again, initially through no fault of his own.

Having separated from long suffering wife Kate, he is living above a kebab shop that his daughter Tilly hates as it smells.

So surely a new plush pad overlooking the seafront at Crosby will mean a brighter future for father and daughter, even if the means to acquire the home are a bit dubious?

The scenes were filmed in a stunning new set of properties at Blundellsands in Crosby, nestled behind the sand dunes. The development was still under construction during filming last year and some of the luxury properties are still on the market at ÂŁ750,000 for a four bedroom house.

St Helen’s Church, Crosby

Viewers from series one will remember alcoholic priest Father Liam Neeson who Chris and Rachel pulled over when they spotted him driving erratically.

Father Liam is back for season two and is priest at the church where Tilly is making her first communion.

Scenes with the priest were filmed at St Helen’s Catholic Church in Crosby.

Football pitches, Bootle

Episode two of the second series of The Responder features Tilly playing in a football match while Chris and his ex wife have a tense conversation about their plans for the future.

Freeman and cast and crew were spotted by locals in Pennington Avenue in Bootle in October last year and at Mellanear Park. They were also seen at the nearby junction of Braby Road and Kirk Road.

Shopping in Liscard, Wallasey

In episode one we saw Chris scrambling to get together the money for Tilly’s communion dress after she picked a gorgeous white gown for the day.

Freeman was spotted outside Tiffany Couture in Mill Lane, Liscard, Wirral, in September last year.

As the time Liverpool Film Office confirmed scenes for The Responder were being shot there.

Martin Freeman paid tribute to Bernard Hill who starred in The Responder with him – read the article HERE.
