Princess Royal set to join Cunard’s 185th Anniversary celebrations
2 weeks ago

Liverpool will play host to a significant moment in maritime history on 27 May, as Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal visits the city to lead Cunard’s 185th anniversary celebrations.
The occasion marks 185 years since the founding of Cunard, and the city—widely regarded as Cunard’s spiritual home—will take centre stage in the commemorations. The festivities commence on 26 May with the arrival of Cunard’s newest ship, Queen Anne, returning to the Mersey nearly one year to the day since her historic naming ceremony on Liverpool’s world-famous waterfront.
Cunard will have the distinct honour of welcoming Her Royal Highness for the first official royal tour of Queen Anne. The British Army Band Catterick will provide a ceremonial welcome to mark the beginning of what promises to be a memorable and historic day.
During her visit, The Princess Royal will join Cunard in celebrating the company’s distinguished maritime legacy, its deep-rooted ties with the city of Liverpool, and the leadership of Queen Anne’s Captains, Dave Hudson and Inger Thorhauge.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, Cunard will unveil its ‘Sea of Glamour’ exhibition at the Royal Liver Building. Curated by renowned photographer Mary McCartney, the exhibition will offer a compelling visual narrative of Cunard’s 185-year history, showcasing the elegance and cultural significance of life at sea.
In a tribute to Liverpool’s enduring connection with the cruise line, Cunard will also be joined by the Queen Anne Icons—five Liverpudlian women chosen to represent the city following Liverpool’s unprecedented role as Godparent to the ship.
Katie McAlister, President of Cunard, said:
“This is a landmark moment for Cunard, and we are incredibly honoured to welcome Her Royal Highness to Liverpool as we celebrate 185 years of our heritage. The opening of the Sea of Glamour exhibition is a fitting tribute to the elegance and legacy that define Cunard, and to the special bond we share with this great city.”
The city of Liverpool can expect a celebration rich in tradition, culture, and pride, as Cunard continues to honour its past while looking confidently to the future.
