After a stellar start to its Autumn-Winter 2024 season, The Tung Auditorium has revealed its spectacular November-December lineup.
From classical and jazz to electric-folk, pop, acoustic, and experimental music, this season’s program at The Tung Auditorium is set to bring a wide range of genres and remarkable talent to the venue, featuring both emerging artists and returning favourites.
In November, the venue welcomes the stunning ‘Sirocco’ , a pieceblending cutting-edge, contemporary ensemble, Manchester Collective with South African Cello virtuoso, Abel Selaocoe. Audiences can “expect the unexpected” as original South African folk rubs shoulders with music from the Western canon, classical strings dance to the beat of African drums and electric bass guitar and outrageous solos await.
The Tung Auditorium have also announced a new Indian Classical concert from Desert Slide in November, created and led by GRAMMY award-winner Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Renowned for creating the Mohan Veena – a unique instrument born from the modification of a western guitar with the addition of several drone and sympathetic strings – Bhatt will play alongside five other exceptional musicians, creating a captivating blend of Rajasthani Manganyar folk and Indian Classical music.
November’s roster also includes critically acclaimed, mesmeric, minimalist noise artists Ex-Easter Island Head, who will take to the Tung stage for the first time. The group have just announced their special guests for the evening, Charles Hayward and Lola De La Mata, two luminaries from the UK’s underground experimental scene.
Hosting some of the UK’s jazz pioneers this season, The Tung Auditorium is delighted to welcome queen of jazz-fusion, Emily Saunders to the stage as part of the venue’s popular lunchtime concert series. Later in the season, exciting new jazz super-group ILUMETRIS will be stopping off on their tour and for fans of Joni Mitchell, the extraordinary Hejira celebrates the iconic songwriter’s 80th birthday, offering entertaining new insights into some of her jazzier back catalogue.
This weekend…
Kickstarting the weekend, Emergence as Empowerment present the highly anticipated film screening of ‘Delado: Rising from the Ashes’ on Friday night, as part of Black History Month in Liverpool. A live conversation and Q&A will then follow, delving into the discourse around Liverpool 8 following the Toxteth Riots of 1981, and the importance of emergence as a form of empowerment.
World-renowned maestro of the veena, Rajhesh Vaidhya, is set to captivate audiences with a specially curated set of ragas on Saturday, as part of Milap’s autumn season of Indian Arts and Culture. His unique style, characterised by exhilarating speed and his use of electric and amplified strings has earned him critical acclaim.
Sunday’s proceedings welcome sensational British ensemble The Chilingirian String Quartet. Astonishing audiences for over fifty years, the quartet will take to the Tung stage performing three solid gold classics (including Borodin’s ravishing Second Quartet), as well as a magical tribute to their Armenian-born founder and leader, Levon Chilingirian himself.
Celebrating artists with local roots, The Tung Auditorium will also host some special homecoming shows with talent from the Merseyside region. In December, Liverpool-born singer-songwriter and award-winning Americana artist Robert Vincent makes his venue debut to celebrate the release of his fourth album, ‘Barriers’. Dorothy Bird will bring her unique art-pop to the auditorium for the first time whilst Pixels Ensemble return for another year in their respective Lunchtime concert appearances.
As the season enters its festive period, The Tung Auditorium will be celebrating throughout December with their annual Christmas concerts from the talented University of Liverpool students (LUMS and the Symphony Orchestra), and the return of a number of popular ensembles with special seasonal shows, including Allerton Brass, Dr Jazz and the Cheshire Cats, Liverpool Welsh Choral, and the Danny Miller Big Band.
