February half term is almost here and if you’re making a list of things to do and places to visit with the kids, Merseyrail’s got you covered.

Jump on a train and you can not only get there quicker, you’ll take away the hassle of parking once you arrive.

And it doesn’t have to cost the earth because with a Family Day Ticket you can make as many trips as you like, all day at weekends and after 9.30am on weekdays, with up to 2 adults and 3 children aged 5 to 15 for just £14.

There are loads of brilliant things to do for the whole family that are an easy walk from a train station, so leave the car at home and make the journey part of the fun.

If you’re still in need of a few ideas, here are some to get you started …

For three nights, from February 14-16, Lord Street is going to be transformed into a technicolour world of light and sound thanks to a fabulous illuminated trail designed by international light artists Lucid Creates. On from 5pm to 9pm each day, Lightport has glowing arches, immersive soundscapes and large-scale installations for families to walk through and explore.

Lunar New Year is always one of the city’s most spectacular celebrations, and as in previous years thousands are expected to descend on the city centre and especially around Chinatown for events over the weekend of February 21 & 22. There’ll be a family zone on Nelson Street, with activities themed around the Year of the Horse, and of course the unmissable sight of the dragon and lion parades on Sunday through the city towards the Chinese Arch.

The Albert Dock is always one of the most gorgeous places for a day out, because as well as the big plus of being down by the river, with those amazing views, it’s fun to play history detective and spot some clues to the city’s maritime past. While you’re testing your brain, there’s a choice of family-friendly games and adventures at Escape Hunt, discover some Fab music memorabilia at The Beatles Story or be a tourist in your own city with one of the fantastic bus tours.
