Fans of their ever changing sound will be on tenterhooks awaiting the new album and tour.
Collating lyrics from authentic life experience and struggles with addiction, The 1975 front man Matt Healy told Rolling Stone Magazine: “We’d been the best emo band out of Manchester in 2009 and then the worst pop band in 2015.”
The 1975’s image is that of a well read, indie rock band that just want to make people dance. Their songs chronicle real life angst, catchy melodies and are often inspired by the likes of Roberta Flack, D’Angelo, Boards of Canada and more. You can’t quite put your finger on it, their sound, we just know we bloody love it.
Here’s 6 things everyone should know about The 1975…
1 – Jack Kerouac
Did you know the name of the band, The 1975 apparently came from scribblings found in the back page of an old poetry book by Jack Kerouac dated 1st June, The 1975. Matt Healy is said to have had the name tattooed on his skin. That’s some commitment!
2 – Rock N Roll Mates
The 1975’s Matt is really good mates with Mick Jagger. Apparently they text and Matt is still pretty stoked to have opened for The Rolling Stones in Hyde Park back in 2013.
3 – 80’s Tastic
The band has frequently stated its love and appreciation of 80’s music and influences. Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel, Michael Jackson and My Bloody Valentine have all made their mark on the band and their music. Matt is also a huge fan of The Streets.
More: This UK garage legend is also playing the M&S Bank arena in 2020.
4 – On Fire
The 1975 released the single “Give Yourself a Try” in May 2018 after premiering as BBC Radio 1 Annie Mac’s “Hottest Record in the World” the same day.Â
5 – Tall Order
It’s safe to say there’s a fair amount of fan-girling goes on when The 1975 are in town. Matt Healy with his young Luke Perry looks, drummer George Daniel is 6ft 5″ so that automatically catapults him into the hot guy in a band category. They’re a good looking bunch aren’t they?
6 – Dressing Up
Gender norms have no place in music according to The 1975. Matt has been known to adopt ‘womens’ clothing and to wear make up in scenes for music videos – and he does it so well! Another reason we adore this band, breaking down barriers with style.
