Northern Music Awards

We’re heading into a huge season of live music, and this Thursday The Olympia hosts the prestigious Northern Music Awards, recognising the best artists, festivals, venues and industry figures in the North. Lightning Seeds frontman Ian Broudie will pick up a Special Recognition Award and the band will perform along with Blossoms, The Zutons, Luvcat and Chiedu Oraka.

Boys from the Blackstuff at Liverpool Empire

James Graham’s powerful adaptation of Alan Bleasdale’s Boys from the Blackstuff comes to the Empire for a week from Tuesday, after sell-out seasons at the Royal Court and in the West End. This production features George Caple as Chrissie, Jay Johnson (Adolescence) is Yosser, and Mark Womack is Dixie.

Borealis lights up the Royal Albert Dock
This is the spectacular light installation that’s been mesmerising Liverpool over the past few nights – Borealis is artist Dan Acher’s beautiful recreation of the Northern Lights in the skies over the Albert Dock. The music is gorgeous and it’s free to see every night at Hartley Quay from 7pm-10pm until March 30.

Liverpool Business Fair – St George’s Hall

Liverpool Business Fair has been giving a platform to the city’s businesses for over 20 years and it’s going strong. This year’s event, on Wednesday from 10.30am-3pm, will be at St George’s Hall. It’s free to attend, there’ll be lots of businesses exhibiting plus seminars, advice and networking opportunities.

Smug Club at Shakespeare North Playhouse

If you fancy a great night of live comedy, head to Shakespeare North this Friday for Smug Club, headlined by stand-up comedian Smug Roberts. He’ll be bringing plenty of sharp wit and laughs to the Cockpit Theatre with support from Danny Sutcliffe, and tickets for the show start from a tenner.

Visit Woolton Village for food, drink and lots of indies – the best place to live in the NW!

It probably came as no surprise to the people who live there when Woolton was named as the best place to live in the North West by The Sunday Times last week. From green spaces for a walk to fantastic restaurants, cafes, pubs and independent shops, there are just so many reasons why it’s a worthy winner.

Bold Street’s food scene just keeps on getting better and better – now, into the mix of so many different cuisines, there’s a new So Salsa. In the spot where Smiffy’s used to be, the family-run tapas restaurant has built a big fanbase since it first opened in Crosby and this new one makes a city centre hattrick.

For a fascinating insight into operations in World War II, Western Approaches is definitely well worth a visit. Western Approaches HQ was a top-secret command centre for the Battle of the Atlantic and discovering all the once-hidden underground offices and rooms feels like stepping back into history.

Waterfront views at Matou on the Pier Head

There are some views in our city that you never get tired of and the one from the roof terrace at Matou is absolutely one of the best. Facing the Liver Building, it’s right on the waterfront so when the sun’s shining there’s nowhere better for al fresco drinks, Pan Asian sharing platters and small plates.
