Your Liverpool Film Guide for April 2018

April is another great month for film fans in Merseyside, proven by the fact that The Philharmonic Hall’s screening of the latest version of Beauty and The Beast, accompanied by The Novella Orchestra, sold out weeks in advance.

The Bombed Out Church also is yet to announce their outdoor screenings for the month, so that will be another thing to keep your eye on. But, with those two things on ice, hon with our top picks for film fans this April.

Monday Night Movie Club, The Jacaranda

This has quite rapidly become a favourite of ours here at The Guide Liverpool as the iconic music venue and record store have screened cult classics and box office smash hits in recent months. This month is no different with the modern comedy classic, Anchorman (2nd April),  High Fidelity (16th April) and the gangster icon, Scarface (30th April). Could it get more eclectic? We don’t think so, but we’re looking forward to The Jac trying. All tickets include FREE POPCORN, FREE TEQUILA and beanbags for you to get comfy in.

Jaws In Concert, The Philharmonic Hall – 7th April

Gutted that you couldn’t get tickets for this months film in concert at The Phil? Well there’s another, equally amazing, although very different, screening on offer. It’s tough to decide whether Steven Spielberg’s film itself, or John Williams’ score, are more famous but, that’s down to you after you’ve heard the infamous score played live. Jaws became the most successful movie of all time, and Spielberg has often credited Williams’ iconic score with much of the film’s success. One thing is for certain, the film has not lost its edge and you won’t be heading down to Crosby Beach after this one.  Book your tickets now.

The Bomb with Director Q&A, FACT – 15th April

It wouldn’t be a cinema guide without something a little niche, for those who are fanatical about film. And, this month, it is Smirti Keshari’s The Bomb, featuring a Q&A with the man himself. Committed to providing a platform that allows art and film makers to ask risky questions, FACT presents the bomb; an experimental, music-driven film that takes viewers on a powerful, visceral journal through the strange, compelling, and unsettling reality of nuclear weapons today. The film is sure to raise as many questions as it asks, which is why it is important for the creator to be given an additional platform on which to talk to those who attend the screening.  Get your tickets now.

Grease 40th Anniversary Sing-Along, FACT – 25th April

Here’s the first of the Grease Anniversary screenings, this one hosted by FACT. The sing-along screenings phenomenon exploded after Frozen and The Greatest Showman smashed the UK box office with these types of screenings. So, what happens when you do this with one of the most successful and best loved musicals of all time? Well, get down to the Picturehouse at FACT to find out and sing your heart out to classics like Summer Loving and Grease Lightening. Tickets still available here.

Grease The Movie: Live, Baltic Warehouse – 28th April

Re-arranged from its originally planned Valentines Day screening, Grease The Movie: Live has been moved to the end of this month. The evening will feature live dancers, a complimentary drink upon arrival, themed cocktail bar, specially prepared street food and a few more surprises. Tickets originally purchased for the Valentines event are still valid, with an announcement on additional tickets expected in the coming weeks.

From independent, political pieces of film art, to blockbusting sing-alongs, there’s something for every type of film fan this month. As Spring dawns on us, heading to the cinema might fall down the pecking order, but with screenings like this, it’s definitely staying right by the top of our lists.
