Cllr Mary Rasmussen set to begin second term of service as Lord Mayor
2 years ago
This week, we will welcome a familiar face as Liverpool’s Lord Mayor, Mary Rasmussen, will begin a second term.
Cllr Mary Rasmussen, who was also Lord Mayor in 2021/22, officially returns as Liverpoolâs First Citizen at the councilâs Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, 17 May, at Liverpool Town Hall.
Cllr Rasmussen served as Deputy Lord Mayor of Liverpool in the past municipal year and will serve a second term as Lord Mayor for the coming 12 months due to the scaling back of duties during her first term as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Cllr Rasmussen was re-elected in the recent elections to represent the new Speke ward. She previously served Speke-Garston where she was first elected in 2007.
She grew up in Garston and was the third of ten children. Her parents Thomas and Theresa were originally from County Mayo, Ireland, and they made Liverpool their home after first trying Glasgow and London. They described their decision to stay in Liverpool as the best decision they ever made.
Mary was educated at St Francis of Assisi Primary School and then attended Blessed John Almond School.
Cllr Rasmussen has held numerous positions on the council, including being chair of the Labour Group and she was also the first woman in Liverpool to occupy the role of Chief Whip.
Maryâs son Michael will be her Consort and her daughter Janine will be Lady Mayoress for her term of office.
This year Mary will be supporting the Local Solutions AIMS â Skills hub as her main charity. The AIMS (Accommodation, Intense Mentoring, Skills) team supports young people who are leaving care or have experience of the care system to improve their short- and long-term prospects.
Cllr Mary Rasmussen, Lord Mayor of Liverpool elect, said:
âTo serve this great city once as Lord Mayor is an honour, to be asked to do so twice leaves me speechless.
âDuring my first term the city was still re-grouping after the challenging months of the pandemic so I am very much looking forward to really being able to get out and about and meeting all the incredible people who support our city.
âLiverpool is the greatest city in the world. I know this and every Liverpudlian already knows this, so being given the opportunity to make sure the rest of the world knows how great we are is an incredible privilege and everyone has my word that I will do Liverpool proud.â
