Merseyside Police named in top 100 for “apprenticeship employers” ahead of all other UK police forces

Merseyside Police is celebrating after being ranked as the highest performing police employer for apprenticeships in the UK.

In the Department for Education’s annual Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers list, Merseyside Police was the top-ranking police force, placing 61st compared to all other eligible employers nationally.

Today, 11 July, The Sunday Times has also released its own ranking, in which Merseyside Police was the only the police force to place – ranking 55th overall, overtaking other major national employers across other industries.

Katie Anderson, Force Apprenticeships and Qualifications Officer, said:

“I’m so incredibly proud to be able to say that we’re setting the standard for apprenticeships in policing.

“To be recognised nationally by the Department for Education, and to be the only police force featured by The Sunday Times, is a huge honour. It’s an accurate reflection of the passion and dedication of our apprentices and the teams who support them.

“We don’t just recruit our apprentices; we invest in them. We really care about who they are and where they’re going long-term. The force has a dedicated team focused on the welfare, development, and progression of every apprentice. This includes mentoring, structured career pathways, and opportunities for promotion. 87% of our Business Administration apprentices go on to get promoted within the force after completing their qualification. That means a lot to us.”

Rob Williams, Assessment and Qualifications Manager, said:

“This is a powerful endorsement of the force’s commitment to developing talent, creating inclusive career pathways and investing in the future of policing.

“Our apprenticeships are a gateway to a meaningful, community-focused career. Whether you’re interested in becoming a Police Constable through the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) or exploring vital support staff roles such as Contact Resolution Officers, IT Technicians, Mechanics, or Administrative Assistants, we have apprenticeships to support people into a career where they can succeed and make a difference.

“We open up different apprenticeship opportunities throughout the year, recruiting staff and officers, so for anyone who thinks it might be for them, I would strongly encourage you to keep an eye on our careers page.”
