Merseyside Police and LFC Foundation host event to educate girls on violence against women and girls

Around 80 girls from schools across Merseyside have come together for a special event focused on raising awareness of violence against women and girls.

The session, hosted by Merseyside Police in partnership with LFC Foundation, brought students from eight secondary schools together for a day of workshops and discussions designed to build knowledge, confidence and awareness.

The event forms part of a month-long programme where secondary school pupils across the region are receiving sessions on Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) during their PSHE lessons.

Organised by Safer Schools Co-ordinator Faye Smith, the initiative aims to highlight the work being done to tackle violence against women and girls while helping young people understand the importance of healthy relationships and respect.

Throughout the day, students took part in workshops covering topics including consent, online safety, self-esteem, exploitation, challenging harmful gender norms and speaking up with confidence.

Sessions were delivered by teams from Merseyside Police’s Cyber Unit alongside organisations including Girls with Dreams and Trinity Wellness. Julie Dale also shared her personal experience with attendees.

Guest speakers including Leanne Campbell, Megan Kimmance and Louise Ashton also joined the event for a Q&A session with the students.

Faye Smith said the work being done with young people is crucial in helping them understand what behaviour is acceptable and what crosses the line into abuse or misogyny.

She added that events like this are designed to empower girls with the knowledge and confidence to recognise their worth, challenge harmful behaviour and support each other.

Matt Parish, CEO of LFC Foundation, said working alongside Merseyside Police helps open important conversations with young people using the power of the Liverpool Football Club badge.

He added that partnership working is key to creating real change and helping young people feel confident discussing such important real-life issues.
