Bin Crosby and Bingo Starr are just two of the new recruits who’ll be doing the rounds when Sefton Council starts its food waste collections later this year.

They’re not members of staff who’ve recently been signed up – but the new food waste recycling vehicles that’ll be picking up the scraps from households in the area to improve sustainability and cut waste.

The council launched a competition asking for new names for its shiny new vehicles in February – and the winners just announced are brilliant.

Binderella, Hungry Horace, Eleanor Binby, Paddy the Caddy and Gordon Binit are among the 14 winning names that left councillors giggling.

The remaining names, submitted by residents, school pupils and council workers, were Bin Appetit, Peels on Wheels, The Very Hungry Caddy Filler, Captain Compost, Scrapasaurus Rex, The Green Machine, and The Sefton Scrapper!

Leader of Sefton Council, Cllr Marion Atkinson said: “It was fantastic to receive so many creative ideas from the local community, including contributions from schoolchildren, the imagination and enthusiasm is wonderful to see!

“I’ll certainly be keeping a look out for these vehicles when they come down my road as the new service begins.”

Cllr Atkinson was on a panel of judges which included the cabinet member for cleansing and street scene Cllr Peter Harvey, who says the response to the competition was overwhelming, with more than 200 entries received.

He said: “Choosing just 14 winners was incredibly difficult given the creativity on display, but congratulations to those selected.”

And he adds: “These vehicles will help transform how we collect recycling in Sefton and will be part of our communities for many years to come. It’s fantastic that residents, children and employees have all played a part in creating a lasting legacy.”

The rollout for food collections was originally due to be the beginning of April but, like many local authorities across the country, Sefton Council was unable to meet that date because of nationwide demand for the vehicles and equipment needed.

Sefton will now introduce food waste recycling collections in winter, and the council already has the food caddies ready for distribution to residents.
