Aintree Racecourse boss bigs up Liverpool as gates open for Grand National Festival

As the Grand National Festival kicks off at Aintree Racecourse, anticipation is running high for three days of thrilling races and unforgettable entertainment.

With an expected 150,000 guests descending upon Aintree Racecourse over the course of the Grand National Festival, it promises to be an electrifying event for both racing enthusiasts and casual spectators alike.

Dickon White, Aintree & North West Regional Director at The Jockey Club, expressed his pride and excitement about being part of the Randox Grand National Festival. “I feel really proud and privileged to be involved with The Randox Grand National Festival at Aintree,” he said.

One of the notable changes at this year’s festival is the introduction of The Red Rum Garden. Racegoers can expect an enhanced experience with 60% more wet weather cover, extended bar space, and a new DJ platform to ensure everyone enjoys the same vibrant atmosphere.

Speaking about the Red Rum Garden, Dickon commented, “We’ve got this incredible area inside the Red Rum Garden which is going to hold thousands of people. They can stay there and watch the racing in the afternoon… but there’s also live music too. There’s going to be a real buzz about it.”

In addition to improvements in the entertainment areas, there have been adjustments to the timing of the Grand National race itself. Dickon explained, “We have moved the Grand National race itself. Historically it ran at 5.15pm, this year it will be at 4.00pm. This is due to various reasons… ultimately what we are trying to do is safeguard the future of the Grand National.

“The welfare of the horse and jockey is our number one priority and always will be. So making these subtle changes will help that.”

Highlighting the significant economic impact of the Grand National on the Liverpool City Region, having brought in £60M last year, the Aintree boss emphasised the importance of local support. “This event does not really exist without the Liverpool people. But it is also about all the local businesses that support us as well,” he said.

White commended the efforts of Merseyrail and local hospitality establishments in ensuring the smooth running of the event and encouraged everyone to embrace the festival spirit. “This is a fantastic event. The world is watching us here at Aintree over these next few days, and we want the whole region to shine because of the Grand National Festival. Come and have a great time and enjoy the experience,” he concluded.
