NHS staff take on Run Aintree to raise funds for hospital charity

Eight staff members from the University Hospitals of Liverpool NHS Trust are taking on Run Aintree, completing laps around the legendary racecourse to raise funds for charity.

The team will be joined by runners of all abilities to take on the flat, fast course across the 5k, 10k, and half marathon distances, cheered on by supporters creating an incredible atmosphere.

Every penny raised supports patients and their families across Aintree, the Royal, and Broadgreen hospitals, funding vital equipment, life-saving research, improvements to the hospital environment, and staff training and wellbeing.

Caroline Jennings, dementia and delirium nurse, is raising funds to support her team:

“I wanted to challenge myself and Run Aintree has provided motivation for me to train regularly. It’s extra inspiration knowing that just £150 could fund activities at one of our Frances Dementia Care Centres, for one month. This would help my team to deliver meaningful activities including music, crafts, and sensory sessions bringing comfort, routine and joy to our lovely patients living with dementia.

“I see first-hand the impact that charitable funds have across our hospitals and the different it makes to patients. Everyone knows someone that has been treated at one of our sites and this is my way of saying thank you on their behalf, for the excellent care given.

“As healthcare professionals we strive to do the best we can and understand the NHS budget is limited, by joining together we can provide a for the benefit of our patients and colleagues.”

Jenny Foster, head of finance & financial staff development convinced colleagues to run as a team. She explains:

“The Finance Flyers are swapping spreadsheets for sprints! We are a mixed ability group that encourage each other to train, and exchange tips and advice. Some of the team work with the charity and we know every mile we run will makes a real difference to the community right here in Liverpool.

“Each of us would love to support one newly-diagnosed Breast Cancer patient and we know that just £87.50 per person funds a specialist post–surgery bra; a chemo care basket which are put together by one of our patient volunteers, and a pulley to support physio and recovery.”

There are four Run Aintree races running throughout the year:

  • 10 May 2026 (deadline to enter April 30th)
  • 12 July 2026
  • 27 September 2026
